Hi.

you have probably read or heard about this:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...atford-shopping-centre-near-Olympic-site.html

i grew up not too far away from stratford and during my time, all i hear from that area is a whole load of negatives, from people stealing stuff off u to people just killing each other.

When london one the olympics i was happy like everyone but when it was later announced that they will build and host it on Stafford i was gutted and since then, couldn't care much about the olympics as a whole.

So fast forward in time, the stadium is complete, shops etc etc have all been re-developed around the area. So has crime rate changed? Nope. Still a ****hole.

Just today i heard lots of people where randomly stealing stuff in the shopping center

Doesn't matter how much money u poor into a area, it wont change the people.

What will change people is a better education. Not building a large shopping centre etc etc.

This wont be the last thats for sure and i fear for the people who are taking part in the olympics. Hope security is very tight for those folks because Stratford is and will always not be a safe place to be in.

Rant over

Roll on more London riots during the Olympics in front of the world's media. Wonder what DC would have to say about that.

stratford is a hell tbh.. :/ used to hang around there late at nights a lot with bunch of mates :] chased through the shopings fights in parks and all that

never again will i go there without a reason

They spent £350 million regenerating Deptford. It's still a ****hole.
Building a new park and doing up the highstreet doesn't change anything for anyone.

These areas need a lot of social initiatives (Youth clubs, sports clubs, etc) as well as lots of educational funding and employment training. The problem is, the people these services are aimed at are immigrants, and this leads to two problems:
1) Labour voters are primarily on low and middle incomes, so real social initiatives which improve incomes and quality of life reduce their number of voters (in the long term)
2) Conservative voters do not like their tax monies spent on immigrants, those who haven't contributed, and more generally, the public.
As a result, neither party has any incentive to spend the money and actually make things better in these areas.
Call me cynical but this is exactly what has been happening for the past 30 / 40 years in London.

As soon as you accept that the bad areas can increase or decrease in size then you've accepted that things can change.

I don't think you can change a good area into a bad area...however you can reduce how bad it is, and over time other areas will envelop it.

It's happened in parts of Glasgow and it'll continue to happen.

I don't expect many of you to agree though - this thread looks to be another populist circle jerk.

Well it does bring jobs into the area, less unemployed and less time on peoples hands could reduce crime right?

Those that got the jobs or even applied most likely wouldn't be those committing the crimes tbh.

It is a ****hole even though money has been poured into making it a little bit nicer. Wouldn't say it's Stratford specifically but Newham in general.

There's always a police murder sign somewhere asking for witnesses.

I live in Stratford and I agree with jonneymendoza - you can't just drop a shopping centre in Stratford and solve all of Newham's problems. It takes proper investment in schools and local services. Unfortunately, that investment can't come from McDonald's and the government isn't willing to make it.

It's not too bad in Stratford, I've only had my phone robbed at gunpoint only once in 20 years.

To be honest most of East London is like that. Having lived in East London around Stratford, Gate, Plaistow, Canning Town, Leyton etc there is not a lot of difference between them.
