Console games are 480p upscaled?

I was recently told that while our games on PC run at true 720p, 1080p etc the consoles only run upscaled 480p resolutions (before being applied the resolution of your T.V).

People wonder why the Xbox can still pump out impressive visuals?

Not a console hate thread btw, just wondering if it is true, and if it is, I think people should know. :p

I remember being very disappointed when I hooked up my PC monitor to the first PS3 that I repaired. Even though the majority of the demo games looked very low end in graphics, there were a few titles that had impressive HD visuals like WipeoutHD.

I don't think this is the case for all the games. Take Unchartered, God Of War, Little Big Planet, etc.

In fact, God Of War was in 720p on the PS2 for a fact!

How can the Xbox/Ps3 run a game, for example Skyrim, on a 480p T.V, and then a 720p T.V and then 1080p T.V all at the same performance? Like every single one will be (example, not actual) 30-35fps at those resolutions, not only can the consoles old hardware not run those, but surely if it tried to without the T.V upscaling for them, there would be performance issues?

If there isn't, its about time PC had the technology and ability to go to highest resolutions without the need for better hardware! :p

I was under the impression that most games run at just under 720p - something weird like 6x0p. I know the CoD games on consoles run at 540p in order to maintain 60fps. Some games run at 720p; some are less.

I think alan wake used that resolution, I read that the new cod will drop the res lower than previously to crank up in other areas, I personally feel like your playing through a smudgy smeared lens with a lot of console games now.

edit: apparently Alan wake was a composite of different resolutions with its lowest being 540p

This stuff is pretty crazy, personally I don't think any console game is native 1080p, with the exception of games like Tekken & Street Fighter, I wouldn't be surprised if I found out Skyrim was 360p unscaled, same with Metro 2033 and Battlefield 3. There is no way, no matter how uncluttered the consoles may be, or how optimized the games are, you simply cannot run those levels of visuals without upscaling on the hardware they have. It's still impressive how sneaky it is that they upscale, fooling the average person in believing they are playing true PC quality.

Again, not hating on consoles at all, just the truth! :p

Dunno if its still the case but a lot used to be 1024x600 (yes it _should_ be slightly wider) then upscaled to fake up AA (and to keep 30fps).

So consoles do employ trickery to maintain high quality visuals, and not impressive hardware. Wish I could do this on my PC, I'd rather run 1080p quality visuals while knowing its all fake but still looks the same, rather than having the hardware to actually run 1080p -_-

Games on consoles run at varying internal resolutions. Most run below true 720p.

Ridge Racer V on PS3 can run at 1080p/60.

There are quite a few, Wipeout HD on PS3 is the first that comes to mind.

Skyrim is 1280x720 on PS3 and 360, BF3 is 1280x704 on both. Can't find any info on Metro 2033.

Does anyone know a game that actually processes at 1080p, and doesn't rely on the T.V upscaling?

IIRC the tennis games or those lower gpu intensive games do, and that's how consoles manage to play all the 'latest' games at decent framerates (plus the textures and graphics aren't as high res as the PC versions).

Still, upscaling looks basically the same as true HD, so if you ask me consoles are doing it right, I'm sure most peoples rigs could handle anything at say 1280x720 upscaled to 1080p, rather than requiring 3x the hardware just to do it legitimately, despite looking basically the same. :p

Of course their rigs can, lots of people probably do this too by playing at a lower than native resolution but with higher quality game settings on :D

The only downside (well for me if I were to ever do that) is that when you alt tab out it takes a little moment to change the res back :)

Not really, but when you're playing on a console you're generally sat a distance away from the TV so the fact it's a lower resolution is less apparent. On a PC you're closer to the display, so lower resolutions and detail levels are immediately obvious.
