My guess is that the people advocating this aren't the ones that would be making the 24/7 consumer dream, a reality.

No, I paid attention in school

I put down "Not bothered". Considering how little I actually go to the shops these days them being open longer on a Sunday will have no real impact on my life.

RE: People saying I don't work weekends...

...I worked for 4 years in retail during university. I also had to work Saturday and Sunday shifts. I do know what it feels like to work weekends.

Scrap it.

Annoying not being able to go to the shops on sundays because 90% of places are closed.

Yeah it's annoying retail workers get time to spend with their damn families aint it.

Everyone knows the retail hours on a Sunday are limited, so do your shopping on Saturday or on your lunch in the week.

Most corner shops open all day still so you've still got them for emergency supplies.

You'll probably find a lot of retail workers are part timers using the money to put themselves through school/college/university.

It wasn't a serious comment hence trollface.jpg

I did the same - and I don't miss Sainsbury's one iota.

Why are people assuming Sunday would be an extra day?

You'd work it instead of one of your other days.

You lose nothing.

I voted for do not scrap. I don't believe it will generate much revenue if any.

I like the fact things close and Sundays should be a day of rest.

That's one of the things I love about thE continent, things shut down and you can have a peaceful weekend. If you need anything you just have to plan your lives a bit better.

In all seriousness, I see no reason to keep it, the idea was ill conceived and poorly thought through in the first instance. Frankly I don't give a monkey's about the family time etc., if you don't like it then get another job.

It should be scrapped for convenience and to generate more working hours under the condition that extra hours, especially for 24 hour shops, must employ new staff rather than stretching current staff.

Pretty much this.

I went to the co-op to buy some cake last night about 6.30 and it was closed! Infuriating.

I voted scrap but I do agree with my mother on this, who says why is there a need for shops to be open all the time.. maybe people should plan a bit better.

But IMO it should be the other way around. To ban something or to make a law, you need a very good reason to ban it. I can't see any reason in this case. We are no longer a mon-fri nation. We are very much 24-7, with millions of workers working any hour off the week.

Well....maybe we shouldn't be. Maybe we should be protecting a specified rest day as much as we can. If may well be better for society if more people had the opportunity to spend some regular quality time together, better for the cohesion of the family unit and cohesion of society in general.

Not everything in life is about profit and economics. Nor should it be.

Well....maybe we shouldn't be.

We wouldn't be able to compete in the world markets like we currently do and it would take massive changes. Reduce work and earning potential. I for one don't want that, as much as I would love weekends off, my earnings would probably drop by 50%.

Therefore it should be upto the employee to decide, not government.
If you don't won't to work such shifts go to a company and/or a different(usually less paid) contract.

You've missed the point. Like bank holidays, one of the ideas behind Sunday trading laws is that everyone is off at the same time, hence people can be with their families.

There's no point getting Wednesday and Thursday off if the rest of your family/friends are working/at school.
