I've been given the opportunity to work in Pakistan

Where's that then? It's not Pakistan.

If you read the previous posts, it is Pakistan.

Yes, but understandable.

If you hire local security there will be nothing to worry about, just don't walk/go anywhere alone, and check the region you're travelling to. (security is cheap, my mum hired me a personal guard with an AK47 at my sister's wedding)

I worked for 2 weeks in Karachi in 2010. Its the main financial hub for Pakistan and as such is not quite the warzone. We stayed in a really nice hotel and had 2 security details with us.

Apparently all foreign nationals who worked for this company had them and the Hotel rooms were permanently 'booked' by them.

Not saying I would go out to the local every night but it is also not quite the Al Qaeda breeding ground a lot think it is.

if you need an armed guard to ensure your safety..then its not very bloody safe!

Think of the work experience, and having arm guards? AWESOME.

Maybe because I'm still young and such adventures interest me before I settle down and have kids.

You probably will be taxi'd to work taxi'd kept in the compound or 5 star hotel.
I refused to work in Angola (oil and gas) but friends have. One in a secure compound and 1 not so secure.

Depending on what you will be doing and for only 1 week, Id do it. Even if its sitting in a Hotel bar every night.

Not sure id ever trust the deterrent factor of hired armed security, unless it wasn't native.

Id love to go to the places like Michael Palin visited
way too old and self conscious now :P

I was approached at work for a potential job in Pakistan and my reply was to my manager "not a chance in hell!" saying that, it would have been in the middle of nowhere

Take the word of a random forum member or the FCO .. hmmm, tough choice!

Yes, the FCO suggest not going to parts of the country. Much like they do with Russia, Egypt and Thailand. Amongst others. I guarantee that if someone posted a thread saying "My work want to send me to Thailand for a week", we would see very few (if any) posts saying it's a hell hole and must be avoided at all costs.

Good lord, what if one of the ladyboys try to bum you?
