15k - Semi 'posh' car?

Hilarious "discussion" r.e the a4 and a5, how naive would you have to be to genuinely believe these are different cars? The coupe version of almost any car now has vwry subtle styling differences to the saloon/hatch but its still the same bloody car!

The a5 does look bigger on the road but tbh I think that's more a product of the coupe being lower and with the 2 longer doors, the hatchback looks identical to the a4 in size

Drove an s5 (with the v8) and loved if for the soundtrack, not sure how id get on with one of the more mundane engines though I liked the interior

You cannot get A4 cabriolets in this generation - the cabriolet is the A5 now.

The A4 and A5 are the same product line only with different names for branding purposes. The A4 badge is found on the Saloon and Estate versions and the A5 badge is found on the Coupe, Cabriolet and 5 door hatch versions. They are the same car. Same platform. Same engine range. Same styling cues. Exactly the same interior.

The relationship between an A4 and an A5 is the same as that between a 3 Series Saloon and a 3 Series Coupe. Audi chose to try and differentiate with a different name, BMW didn't, thats all. The A5 is effectively an A4 Coupe. No wait not even effectively, it *is* the A4 Coupe.
I may be corrected when they eventually come out, but I believe BMW have moved to market the new F30 cab/coupe as the 4 series rather than the 3 series, so it looks like all the Germans are at it now!

Thats the rumour, yes. I could have sworn I'd mentioned that last night but looking back I didn't. It allows them to move a product to a slightly higher market segment simply by changing the brand a bit and offering what was fundamentally the same product.

It'll still be a coupe version of the F30 though :D

To be fair its not just Audi that do it, Merc confused everyone for years with the CLK - the name gave you the impression it was a model in its own right whereas in reality it was a 2 door Coupe version of the C Class. If anything Merc were even worse with it as they also had a 3 door hatch version of the C Class called the C Class Coupe, making even less people realise that the actual C Class Coupe was the CLK :D

Ironically just as the others start off with the random-naming thing, Mercedes go back to the one-name-fits-all approach. For the first time in ages, the new C Class Coupe actually is.. a C Class Coupe.

CLK is based on a mix of components between the C and E class Mercedes' the platform being C Class and the interior being almost totally E class. It was pitched at being an E Class Coupe and was replaced by the E Class Coupe, so it isn't quite as comparable as the A4 and A5, but they do share some components. The CLK is a much nicer place to be than a stock C Class.

Newer models are more clearly the C Class/Coupe and the ambiguity as you say has gone.

It was a bit of a collection of things wasn't it but I did a comparison a few years back when it came up then and price wise it was aimed squarely at the 3 Series Coupe.

Indeed, to further confuse things, I am pretty sure the current E-Class Coupe still uses the present C-Class Platform.

I've heard that Jaguar might be trying to do a similar thing with their naming to make the names of the cars a lot less confusing, to make things a bit more German, as they'll pretty much have the same lineup of competing cars bar a 1 series competitor in the next few years. I assume they'll bring back the ?-type styles assuming the F-Type is the start of this, but then they've already used up most of the early letters with classic cars, so we'll see when the new generation of XF / XJ / X-Type come out in the next few years.

But at the end of the day OP, Fox is right. If this was a couple of years in the future comparing, you would be comparing the 4 series with the 3 series, saying they're different cars - whereas in reality BMW just pulled off the 3 and replaced it with a 4 on the back. I guess Audi have done their job properly and their marketing has made it clear that the A5 is a 'different' car.

You might be able to get a decent Jaguar XF for your budget, but I don't really know how good £15k examples of these would be.

So what category does the A5 five-door fit into?

The A4 is the 3 series, C-Class equivalent
The A5 is the 3-door version of the A4 competing with 3-series 3-door and E-Class Coupe/Cab.
The A6 is the 5-Series, E-Class equivalent
The A7 is the CLS equivalent
The A8 is the S-Class, 7 Series equivalent

So where does the A5 five-door slot in? It appears to be competing with its own, the A4.

It's just a hatchback variant of the A4 - for people who want an A4 but want more practicality than the saloon can offer but without going for an Avant.

IMO the A4 Avant looks posher than the saloon, the A5 coupe just seems pointless to me, doesnt even look that good and is bland as hell to drive for a sports car. The A5 Sportback looks better to me for some reason, so none of my opinions can be taken seriously.

The C class looks posh, but it feels a bit cheap inside, and the 3 series is fugly, facelift or non facelift, the coupe lessens the uglyness somewhat.

The only sporty cars Audi do start with RS and sometimes an just an S. Anything else and it's like people speccing a 330i Sport/Focus Zetec and trying to claim its sporty.
