Guys I recently updated my graphics card to a HD7870 (the old one was a 5850). No problems - until I fired up GTA IV for the first time since the upgrade.

The game launches upto the loading-screen (the slideshow showing the characters with music playing in the background). The screen then goes blank for about 2 seconds and then:

:(

Never ever EVER seen this in my game before. My two prior cards were HD4870 & HD5850 - no problem. This has appeared since I got my 7870. Its almost like the game is throwing a fuss because I got a MORE capable card

-All Windows 7 64bit updates applied
-Latest Catalyst installed
-Latest display drivers installed
-No problems in any other game - only GTA IV
-I play the game on a 32" HDTV (not the Eyefinity setup in my sig)

Please help me OcUK...need GTA IV fix

This is just what GTA IV is, find a config or .ini file and drop everything to minimum, and then you should be able to play, but you'll most likely be on very unstable or low fps.

Welcome to Liberty City, I hope you didn't buy that piece of ****.

Please help me OcUK...need GTA IV fix

In steam >

*Right click the game in Steam and go to properties
*Launch Options
*Add the command: -norestrictions -nomemrestrict
*Launch the game

Retail / Non-steam version >

*Create a shortcut on your desktop to the LaunchGTAIV.exe - by default this will be in C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV
*Right click the shortcut and click Properties
*Make sure Shortcut tab is selected, you should see a field called "Target", edit this to say the following:

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions -nomemrestrict

^That includes the quote marks and the options coming after the link to the path

*Click Apply
*Double click the shortcut to launch the game.

Hope this helps. :)

@ Sean_UK -

Cheers for the suggestion dude, I did try what you said but unfortunately still the same error. Will poke about a bit more and see what I can do. Maybe lower some more in-game settings. A really strange issue I wonder what the cause of it is. Kind of funny that I got a £270 - odd card sitting in there and I cant play GTA IV!

There is a very detailed thread on Steam's GTAIV forum with a whole load of answers to various problems.

Will give that a shot thanks! Also I just realized something...Im running ENB. Will remove it and see what happens.

I suspect I might have to suck it up and upgrade to the dreaded 1.7 patch. If I manage to fix this I'll jump on here and say how I did it.

Er....sorry for the bump but really trying to fix this. How many of you lot are running GTA IV with the latest patch?? 1.7?? whats performance like with 1.7?

Thanks!!

For the benefit of someone else who has an AMD card and faces the same problem - I fixed it.

1. Disable forced AA in Catalyst
2. If you are using ENB add the -norestrictions line to the commandline.txt

As an example here is my complete enb commandline:

Code:
-norestrictions
-availablevidmem 2.2
-noprecache
-fullscreen
-width 3360
-height 2100

Thats it. Works perfectly :D

Glad you fixed this, really is a great game on the PC.

Thanks :) Yea tons of reply value and its just fun messing about in it - more fun than messing about in Just Cause 2 TBH!

And it looks awesome with ENB on a HDTV...1000 times better on my TV than on my monitors because my Panasonic TV has this great picture-mode called "Dynamic" that makes the already brilliant-looking ENB effects even better.

Pretty happy to say I've finally gotten GTA IV to run well, its on the maximum settings possible with shadows on High not Very High (that seriously takes a lot of power). Benchmarked at 58.6fps @1440x900, occasional jutter but they are rare.

Sadly I think it is the fact I have the latest BIOS and the beta driver for my 6850, so it isn't a fix on Rockstar's end. Although I am running 1.0.7 now too, before I was on 1.0.5.

So glad I got this masterpiece working properly finally, had so much fun online on the Xbox 360 I can't wait to do the same again, do people still play this online much?

Whoa you are one of the few lucky people who are running the game well with the 1.7 patch! Ive had terrible luck with that one. I decided to check it out and it trashed everything, huge FPS drops, stutters etc. Had to reinstall GTA IV which as you know is like having teeth pulled out with rusty pliers.

Still have a burning hatred for "social club" & "clip capture" They got their Securom did they have to force social club down our throats as well!

Long since found that for me 1.4 is the most stable and the majority of ENBs seem to like it. Although of course theres ENBs for 1.7 as well.

But yea..glad you got it sorted too. The ENBs transform it and will keep us messing about in this game until GTA V is released :D

Have to add I am also on 1.0.7 as I just let GFWL update it (retail version) and I have not noticed any difference tbh.

Maybe one day I'll get brave and give it another try (after Ive imaged the entire 1.4 setup hee hee). I did notice it opened up some more sliders in the graphics options. And it also gets rid of "social club".

Yeah, well in a way it does. You still need to login to social club to play online otherwise you can't use multiplayer. But for singleplayer you don't need social club.

If I had mine setup with mods I wanted I don't think I would update either lol, I just moved house and did a complete reinstall so my GTA is bog standard at the moment. Maybe the latest update has issues with ENB performance?

A really good way to boost FPS is to put view distance down to 1, and put detail view up to 100, you can still see the equivalent distance of about 50 view distance, which is enough to see vehicles on one island from the other. Its strange how it works, same with shadows, the difference between high and very high are almost unnoticeable (except at night) yet very high absolutely rapes your FPS.

Not figured how to get anti-aliasing yet, and I'm pretty scared of using an ENB in fear of it killing my framerate, so the games kinda ugly at distance, but otherwise its quite a good looking game, does anyone know how to remove that horrible film grain when it rains?

Gonna try this mod soon: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18420663

I think DayZ is gonna collect dust for a while, even though its digital. :p

No need to be scared dude because: if you choose the right ENB its so easy to try it out - and if you dont like it its easy to get rid off!

This is a really good ENB preset and dirt-simple to install/uninsall, its the one I use: http://www.gta4-mods.com/misc/gionightss-best-enb-final-f9889

1. Unzip it and then take a look at the folder/file structure.
2. *Backup the files/folders it is going to affect in your GTAIV folder (Winrar is great for this)
3. Now just cut-paste the ENB folders into your GTAIV
4. Play!

*Even easier if you keep a backup image of your GTA IV (or entire HD) on an external hard drive

If you hate it just delete the files you copied & restore your backups.
TIP: You can enable/disable ENB *completely* while playing by pressing SHIFT + F12

Ive tried 6 or 7 ENB configs this way. They utterly transform the look of GTAIV and drag it into 2012.

What is the framerate hit like though? I can spare about 15 or so frames, as the stutters drop it to about 30 from 50, so I'd hate it if I was running at 25-35 frames with spikes that fall to 1-10 frames.

TBH I do not have a figure for my FPS, all I will say is that its smooth. I suggest let your eyes be the judge!

However I DO get a terrible FPS drop with if I play in Eyefinity (3 screens) :( This is a real bummer for me as the game does look sweet on 3 displays.

But these days I do 99% of PC gaming on a single HDTV in the living room and that has no FPS problems.ry it

Try it - once you have backed up the files ENB will affect its a no-brainer...you can check out ENB and play around with it and if you reject it: exit GTA IV and trash the files and you are back to default :)
