Prices on 3tb drives

I need three new drives been looking at seagate 3tb drives.

not in a massive hurry though and was wondering if prices are back to where they were before the floods or if prices are still dropping and if so when do people think they will return to normal

Don't know about 3TB, but the current version of the 1TB Seagate drive in my PC is still listed at £20 more than I paid for mine ... back in 2009!

We've already seen rapid price drops for SSDs, and I guess we're in for a BIG price drop on hard drives too to bring them back to the price curve we've come to expect. But when that price drop will start I have no idea. You could wait a long time for your cheap drives - or it could start next week. Best get what you need and stop worrying!
 
as sww says they haven't dropped back down yet, but the tendency in price has been to drop really really slowly since the floods. so you may well end up waiting ages for them to get back down. manufacturers had their little crisis, put prices up, and haven't really had reason to put them back down; people still need hdds, and they're still selling at these prices, so why stop? you may have to just buy, then look the other way!
 
I'm still quite amazed at the prices haven't come down further.

About a week before the floods I bought 4 2TB Samsung drives for the princely sum of £48 each! :D

You can't buy a 1TB for that now!
 
Apparently the consensus seems to be that they wont be coming down too quickly and not to that level either. Im waiting untill the new 2tb (1tb platter) drives hit 70 ish before buying, so i will probably be waiting for a while longer.
 
just bought EIGHT 3tb drives today ** no competitor price talk ** ...pretty pricey considering i bought a few 2tb drives for about 60 quid last year...but that's life. I reckon the seagate 3tb ones are not too badly priced, considering

On a serious note HDD prices suck at the moment - just need to keep an eye out on HUKD as I got my 3TB WD Green for £84...actually £60 as the store made an error.

Prices will probably continbue to edge down but don't think they'll return to "pre-flood" levels - reason was I think that before the floods there was over-supply in the market and companies were cutting prices to ensure that they got some return on the investment they'd made. When the floods came it wiped out a lot of capacity and (combined with some further consolidation of manufacturing into what is basically just WD and Seagate now) the manufacturers were able to take this as an oppotunity to rebuild production at a level that more closely matched demand. So I don't think the prices before the flood were "normal".

Given that when I first built a PC I seem to recall paying £80-100 for a 40MB disk then £85 for the 2TB disk I just bought doesn't seem too bad!

I went for a refurbished 3tb at literally half the price of the new one, i have never had a problem with refurbs, might get another
 
I know exaclty how you's feel. I want to pick up a new HDD but I really begrudge to spend a lot on a new HDD considering what you use to be able to get them from.
 
I would recommend the new Western Digital Red 3TB drives, they are gifted with some very nice features and have a three year warranty and dont come with the high price tag either.

They are also designed to workvery well in RAID systems.

I have just ordered myself two of them for a RAID 1 setup.
