Any WoW old schoolers?

yup I played Vanilla and all the Expansions up to and Incl Cata

don't think I'm going to bother with Panda, in my view the game peaked at TBC, each Expansion since has been a slip.

WotLK was ok in parts and Cata just ripped the soul out of the game, Panda just looks all wrong.

As someone who wasn't a vanilla player (I came in with lich, left before cata and recently re-sub'd), i have to ask... was vanilla with all honesty as great as everyone claims it to be?

I'm always getting told how awesome this game used to be, usually without any info to back that up...

Yep, quit right before TBC, while I was still in a good position, top guild on the realm, great gear I'd worked hard to get.

Wasn't really interested in working to get there again. :o

Been back since, it's a shadow of how I remembered it. :(

Started playing on release date in EU.

Still have a subscription but I don't log on and do anything of interest.

I don't know why I keep subscribing (it's usually a month without then I subscribe), especially when I know I will be bored in minutes!

Oh yes you had to earn ur stuff

Put it this way, to have a purple item in Vanilla was just (start fapping) - well words don't really explain it

The game world was so much more civil then - no spotty superkids and guilds actually thrived. None of this constant guild hopping that goes on.

Oh and a mount at lvl 60

and the Griiiinnnnnnd from lvl 53 to 60 - that was hard work

You dont know how easy u have it sonny :D

Don't believe everything you hear.

Did I have more fun in Vanilla? Yes.

Was the game in a better state than it is now? Not in the slightest.

I didn't join until about a year after it's initial release :p Not played it for at least a year now! They don't seem to be updating it as much as they used to :(

I remember DM being added to the game, I raided ZG a few times when that was new too, I played most around TBC though and really sunk the hours into it then, I left not long after WOTLK came out and came back for cata but only for a couple of months, I don't think I will bother with the new expansion

I remember going to my first 40 man raid and it was epic.

I've played vanilla and all the expansions (on and off). I most enjoyed it up until WotLK. Panda looks awful.

i've played it constantly since the original beta testing. vanilla was fun sure but the game has improved. i don't understand the whining. sure back then a purple meant something more but what is a colour? the better gear is still harder to obtain now. it just happens to be purple as well. if you want something special, get an orange. i much prefer raids like ICC and BT than ZG and AQ

Yes, yes it was.

TBC was also good fun but almost all my fond memories are from Vanilla.

- Open world PvP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh_cLN66zHA&feature=related) - Tyr's hand <3
- Ganking outside dungeon instances because you couldn't just teleport in to them
- Premade bg's (I know you can do this now but it's basically impossible to get a group for RBG unless you have Arena rating)
- 40 man raids. More than 1 instance to farm, you wouldn't just raid for 1 -2 hours a week then log off and play alts.

vanilla_raids.jpg

+ Blackwing Lair

- Epics were epic
- Alterac Valley
- No gearscore or item level
- No arena

I stayed in the same guild for years so I never had a problem gearing up or not having enough gear to get into a raiding guild. I only changed guild once when I got an offer from a better guild on the server.

The reason everyone loves Vanilla WoW: Nostalgia.

Want to tank? Roll Warrior.
Need gold for lots of respecs? Good luck.
AQ40 is current content and you've never raided? No need for you, impossible to gear for it.
Want to play a mage? Learn how to press frostbolt over and over again with the occasional blizzard.
Need to find a group? Spend hours asking in trade chat only for the group to wipe on the first boss and disband
Want a fast mount? Have fun grinding.
Want Blessing of Kings? Innervation? etc etc - best get the right talent points
40 man raids - so much afking

There was plenty of things wrong with Vanilla that have been improved now. The reason people loved it and with TBC (myself included), was because for many it was their first MMO and it still had that new feel. TBC raiding was epic - Illidan and Kael'Thas were awesome fights.

Of course the direction WoW has gone now isn't great with Looking for raid etc. But I have no problems with people being able to gear up easier. As I've stated, if you didn't raid Molten Core it was tough to get into any raiding guild as you didn't have the gear and couldn't keep up.

Another reason for Vanilla and TBC being praised highly is the people you played with. I was in a guild throughout Vanilla and TBC and played with the same people, got to know them, met them irl etc. Was a good laugh. Now people have quit - it's not the same playing experience. You're having to join new guilds which is fine, but it takes time to get to know people like you did before.

When people talk about Vanilla being awesome they are looking at it with heavily rose tinted glasses. Many people preferred vanilla but if they were put back in it now they would hate it I guarantee it!

Yeah the mechanics of the games have improved but now it's competing with many other similar games, many with much better graphics. Back in Vanilla times it really had it's own way as there was hardly anything else like it.

I played vanilla through to cata on and off. Vanilla was by far the best.

Even though I started quite late (about when Naxx was released) I still enjoyed playing the content I could.

I think the thing that made it so good was that the game was made to be good, now it feels like it's made so that anyone can take part. It probably appeals to a wider audience now, but the game has suffered for it. Like I said, I started late, I never did anything more than ZG and MC in Vanilla but I was happy with making progress. Now there's no progress to be made, you just wait for the next patch then get all the gear for free. It's a constant grind to get what you want instead of just doing some raids. Even enchants and gems take some grinding (assuming you don't have loads of money) so even if you just want to raid, you still need to fix up all your gear.

But it's easier to get so you CAN get into raids. People that raid don't need to constantly hit heroics as much as people that don't for gear.
