*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

I ordered the Nexus 7 from Currys just over 2 weeks ago. They only had a free delivery option back then. This is what I'm getting on my order page. Does this mean it will ship on the 18th or arrive at my door on the 18th?

I think anyone with a really great phone, with excellent screen resolution, will probably struggle to justify the Nexus7. It really is just a big phone without the SD slot and connectivity options. If your eyesight is good, you already have a Nexus7 to all intents and purposes. :-)

I imagine the S3 can run Google Earth just as well as the N7, but I must admit what when I put it in Streetview mode today I was highly impressed. You can just move the N7 around like a little portal into the virtual world. It's a rather mesmerising trick. [Edit: that's in Maps, not Earth. You tap & hold the screen and select compass mode. It's brilliant, but not an offline option as far as I can tell... too much data involved over even a small cached area I imagine.]

Someone above mentioned offline maps as well. You only seem to be able to save a relatively basic map, without all the road names [you save it in multiple chunks of up to about 60MB, which is enough to cover Greater London]. But it does work well with the GPS and I was able to watch myself travel across the country at 120mph the other day (on a train, I can't pedal that fast).

I had the exact same status and mine shipped today and i got the confirmation email.

If you got a dispatch email from then if you check the tracking it currently says

so i reckon it will be tomorrow or thursday

The fairly depressing behaviour in this thread has limited my willingness to post about mine, which was delivered Friday. Frankly I'm amazed that folk have got so stressed over something so totally, totally trivial. I guess they are fortunate to have less complicated lives than me, and fewer sources of stress. :-) I wasn't expecting mine until next Friday and as long as I get tracking info when an item's on the way, I'm happy.

Anyway, FWIW I'm very happy with my N7 and contemplating selling my iPad3. They're not directly comparable devices, but the smaller form factor suits my needs well, and it's a lot more portable and less obtrusive in public... for instance when stuck at Euston for over two hours on Monday while they scraped some poor sod off the line up near Hemel.

The onboard speaker is worse than the iPad but much better than my CULV laptop. I haven't tried headphones because my phone's my mobile podcast system, and it's 20+ years since I listened to much music, so I don't need hi-fi quality kit any more.

I hope the mood here improves over the next week. It certainly ought to, because this is a lovely bit of kit IMO. The reviews can be believed for once. However it is just another tech toy, it is not worth getting upset over... Not unless you're the poor person at Google trying to coordinate a release which has been significantly complicated by the actions of a few disobedient etailers. I doubt any of them will be getting much stock if/when the Nexus10 is announced.

thank you for taking the time to post some real information about the device (rather than the difficulties in purchasing it).

the next phase for this thread WILL be obsessing over some other aspect (removable USB thumbdrive support or why Google play music is not available ... though it actually really is or if the screen is too dim).

still I do take a certain pleasure in seeing the sheer injustice of the pre-order allocation fiasco. my heart goes out to those who have been wronged by google ( but it is pretty funny to watch ) ... ;);)
