*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

That does look nasty. The list of faults is already looking too long.
Shock, horror... mass launch of extremely popular item reveals lack of perfect QA. :-)

That backlight example must be pretty rare, because there's no way a human QA operative is going to have passed that.

As ever the only way to guarantee a perfect sample is to go to a bricks & mortar store where you can exchange on the spot. This has been true for approximately forever for roughly 100% of all retail products. And it's why you usually pay a premium for that option.

Arrived today from the big high street retailer. Seems perfect, everything is flush and no backlight bleed, very happy so far.

Ring them, you might still be a victim of computer2000, you'll know if there's no card at your address but they say they put one through your door, my address had "Gordon House" inserted after my house num and street name on the post label even though all the computerised records were showing correct the driver attempted del elsewhere.

I had that too, random.

Hearing the screen isn't very bright... anyone else agree with that or is brightness ok?

A page or two back I said the screen is surprisingly useful even in bright sunlight. Not Kindle useful, but adequate unless you want to spend lots of time browsing while getting a tan. Indoors it is excellent IMO. Not quite iPad3 quality, but then not iPad3 pricing either.

The good news is that before long these things will be available everywhere so those of a nervous disposition can check. :-)

I'm increasingly amazed that these things are so affordable, and that Tesco deal is excellent. The flip side is that if you go for quantity and a worldwide release there are going to be QA issues. All the more reason to be patient, because nobody on the entire planet needs one of these. It's all want. :-)

PS I have found a Mark I Jiffy bag makes a very convenient, safe and incognito carry case. I've forked out for a £6 special from an amazing shop, but I think I'll leave it without a case. The form factor is nice just the way it is, and it's not so expensive that I'm going to live in permanent fear of scratching it. Might put a screen saver on though. The one I put on the iPad3 made no difference to the performance or image quality (not that I can discern anyway).

I just leave it on auto, which is fairly aggressive, ie will tend to lower brightness, but I've found it fine. If you want to go manual, there's enough brightness to burn holes in your eyes, should you wish.

I can see from tracking that I have 2 waiting at my neighbours..

I left a 'delivery refusal' note on the door for any TNT parcels to my address but they've not even noticed that and left it with a neighbour.. :(

I may open it, check if it's perfect, if it has zero issues, I may throw it up on MM to see if anyone wants a known defect free version, although I'd have to charge extra shipping on top, so not sure anyone would be that bothered. Or I have to phone google and try to get the original shipping refunded (it was 1 day late on the 3 weeks they stated) so I won't be out of pocket returning it..

At least I have a choice of 2 now, lets see if I can get at least 1 good one out of them..

Well the common things people are reporting are:

The left side of the screen slightly raised above the casing
Dents on some parts of the device
Ghosting on the screen
Backlight leak
Thanks. Will check mine ASAP!

If i do have problems, i guess i just box up and take it instore for a refund?

That's strange - i rang my local (Ramsbottom) TNT depot this morning asking them if they could leave with a neighbour but the chap told me they couldn't to so. Something to do with instructions by Computer 2000.
Luckily enough, the wife left work early and it's now sat on the coffee table at home awaiting my return from work..... something that i am now dreading having spent the last hour trawling the Nexus 7 defect thread over on XDA :eek:

I won't trouble myself reading up on all the faults but if there's something wrong with it
I'll just send it back for a refund. Hoping it'll be okay though.

Help me decide... My refund has now been fully processed. Do I or don't I get another one from purple shirts and hope for no faults.

Fortunately (or not) I have a lot of stuff delivered home and work (Usually the same drivers), so they often do their utmost to deliver.. I checked the 'name' on the TNT tracking, it's defo my neighbour..

But good luck, you'd think paying extra + being last in line would net you a good one!

:)
