Paleo / Ketosis diet - anyone else tried it?

How about some scrambled eggs in butter (not spread, proper block butter) with a couple of slices of smoked salmon, used to cost a fortune but smoked salmon is pretty cheap these days. Quite like my smoked salmon with a shake of black pepper and a drizzle of fresh lemon juice and olive oil.

If you don't want the butter for paleo reasons then leave it out, it's pretty tragic not to be allowed butter!:(

Eggs in the morning done however you like with any meat is good though, bacon is an obvious one, I also quite like scrambled eggs with cold ham off the bone and some English or French mustard. Also steak & eggs is pretty awesome for brek!.

Avocado and walnuts with a handful of blueberries is good if you want a meat free brekky on the odd occasion, blueberries are very low sugar fruit as are most berries so no need to worry about over doing the carbs.

Butter is ok, though the puritans really do fight on sites like paleohacks.com about the stupidest things. Cant do this as it wasnt available to prehistoric man - but magnesium sprays are ok, because you could pick them up at the local shops in 45,630 BC !

Never been a fish type of person but am turning round to it - probably cos the missus cooked an awesome salmon dinner last week :)

Wee update. From starting out on this at about 12 stone 3 I weighed in on Monday and now at 10 stone 10. Feeling fitter, sleeping better, not as tired during the day and looking tons better - fitting jeans and tshirts Ive not been able to get into in years but I left in the wardrobe as a reminder to get myself sorted out.

Not had any cravings for sugar at all but did end up having a KFC on Sunday night as was out with the missus. Ate a big meal, tasted **** and went right through me - no harm done :)

Thumbs up for the paleo-ketosis style diet as it does everything it says on the tin.

Oh lawd, not Wolf and the paleo cult again!

Yes, eating a paleo style diet will promote weightloss and well-being. But damn the paleo cult people drive me nuts. I listened to Robb Wolf's podcast from the beginning, until around the 50th episode or so, maybe a little more. I really liked the look of it. However, I watched Wolf sink further and further down the rabbit hole and I started to realise how much ******** he really does buy into. The guy is nuts about traditional Chinese medicine and all that ****. I really started to question his expertise.

When Lyle MacDonald and Alan Aragon started taking him to task on some of his bogus claims, Wolf basically flat out said they're just jealous they didn't 'discover' it first. lol

I always struggle with my weight on a normal diet

low carb makes me loose weight at a stupid rate no matter how much I eat (though there is some debate that you just end up eating less calories)

There isn't really a debate.

As with everything I dont buy into things completely when someone is "selling" something at the end. Thats why I was interested when it was a tech guy explaining it on a different podcast with no book to sell.

If the diet makes you feel good and results in less calories and less hunger/want then thats a good thing too all round.

Even Robb Wolf doesn't recommend low carb for any type of endurance or sprint type training. He would just say have lots of sweet potatoes/yams and no grains.

Looking into more than what Robb says a lot of athletes are now on this style of diet and doing well, apparently when your body converts over from burning carbs to burning fat thats what you need more of so without doing the conversion you wont know.

You don't need loads of sweet potato and yams for endurance. I can run 10k + quite happily without them or any other carbs. I make a drink of 3 whole eggs, 2tbsp butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil mixed in a blender with 2 cups of hot water and flavoured with 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, wait an hour then run. No significant carbs the day before other than fibrous vegetables, never any starches/grains/fruit etc.

I started Paleo a few months ago and I'm loving it. As some have said, it is NOT low carb. Granted, I still keep them down as I had to lose about 20kg (I am down 10kg now so about 10 to go), but the emphasis is actually on vegetables and fruit, which yes, do have carbs of course.
I tend to follow the "Primal" way more à la Mark Sisson, which is a bit less restrictive and less anal than some Paleo fundamentalists. Love my full fat Greek yoghurt from Lidl...
Overall this has been a real eye opener for me and it "just makes sense".
I agree that it is all about just cutting the grains and the sugar. Do that and you cannot buy 70% of what is in a supermarket and your health will thank you for it.

Copy n paste from my FB ...

Not usually one (well never) for doing the photos in the mirror borrocks but been asked twice in the last day by friends about the "wonder" diet Im on and how it works. So here's a pic of me today, 7 weeks after starting the diet and down from around 12.4 stone to 10.5 stone. No exercise in the last 3 weeks (too busy) and no starvation. What Im doing is based on the paleo ketosis diet (eating things our bodies have evolved to digest) and missing out on agricultural foods such as sugar, starch, wheat, grain and stuff like that. I've limited myself to less than 50g of carbs per day for the last 7 weeks and instead eat more meat, eggs, fish, fry in olive oil, dropped milk and went for lactose free milk and no sugary drinks at all - everything is Pepsi Max, Lilt Zero etc. Now eating less, never feeling hungry, sleeping better, more strength and energy and my alergies have calmed down too (not one bout of hayfever in last 2 months). Diet consists of a balance of protein and fats with no carbs. Dead simple. Here's the pic - jeans I couldnt fit in and tie the top button 7 weeks ago now loose fitting and thats a size 28" waist - me usually wearing 34" waist jeans a couple of months ago ...

Excellent results mate well done, gonna give this a try i think.

Rikki have listened to the podcasts and they are very interesting indeed :)

What is your daily meal intake ? What do you eat and such ?

I want to start but need to know what to eat and when.

Thanks

Glad you didnt get too bored, the guys a boffin and it can make you switch off sometimes but when you break it all down it makes complete sense :)

At first it was tricky, I was accustomed to lunch, snacks then dinner then maybe something snacky later on. One of the problems with a grain/carb based diet.

I did a complete swap so for lunch changed to having sandwiches - without the bread! Ham slices, chicken tikka slices, corned beef etc. Or tuna fish and mayo in a bowl instead of a baguette.

Dinner I moved to frying everything in olive oil - you cant heat as hot as lard/sunflower but its the best for this style of diet. I'd have eggs, bacon and then melt normal cheap cheddar cheese slices on the bacon - sounds daft but it actually tastes decent. Its part of balancing the protein intake (meat) with fat intake which as the podcast says should try to be 50/50. Im probably 70/30 towards protein so cheese helps along with the olive oil.

As the weeks went on I stopped being hungry, Id forget to eat. Now I have to pretty much force myself to eat as my stomach never feels empty, it never groans etc and some days I miss out breakfast and lunch altogether. Like today.

Today from getting up at 7am this is what Ive eaten drank (there abouts):

7am - Cup of coffee : 2 sweeteners, one teaspoon of coffee, one of Options Belgian Chocolate, dash of Lactose free whole milk
8am - Cup of coffee : 2 sweeteners, one teaspoon of coffee, one of Options Belgian Chocolate, dash of Lactose free whole milk
9.30am - Cup of tea : 2 sweeteners, normal tea bay, lactose free whole milk
10.30am - Glass of Pepsi Max Cherry
11.30am - Can of Vimto sugarfree
1.00pm - Cup of tea : 2 sweeteners, normal tea bay, lactose free whole milk
3.00pm - Can of 7UP Free
5.30pm - 6 Rashers of bacon fried in olive oil with 6 slices of cheddar cheese melted on top
8.30pm - Cup of coffee : 2 sweeteners, one teaspoon of coffee, one of Options Belgian Chocolate, dash of Lactose free whole milk
10.00pm - Glass of Fanta Zero
12.00am - Cup of tea : 2 sweeteners, normal tea bay, lactose free whole milk

The times might be off and I might have missed one of the drinks or had too many listed but thats my day.

Total food intake was the bacon and cheese because I didnt feel hungry.

Not saying this is how I recommend to go but its what works for me and here I am at nearly 1am doing work on the PC and feeling great, not tired, slouchy etc.
