How should the NHS deal with the obesity epidemic? Lost battle?

Are you claiming that laziness is a mental issue? Then my friend, we've all got problems in one way or another. Maybe they can develop a pill?

I will argue that yes it is a mental issue. I think they are developing a pill :)
for the metabolism of certain humans that may or not be adaptable to everyone.

I also agree we all have problems in one way or another but this one seems to offend more people than most so we must stamp it out now.

Im not sure "mental issue" is probably the correct terminology. It probably denotes a severity much more than i am using it to, but, as an untrained mental health professional i am not sure of the correct terminology in this situation.

Laziness must be attributed to something or some thought process in the brain that maybe we can breed out by sterilization and forced labour camps
?

Scrap the NHS and everyone pay private medical insurance.

Thus instantly saving the budget a few 100 billion

Killing all the poor

Starving the fat to death.

Only the super rich and fit elite would live

invade Germany and France.
:D:D:D

I'm sure some on this board would agree without even a smile.

You tease. You know I love the idea of locking up the inept, lazy, fat and useless. :p

It clearly is a problem, but is throwing more money to the NHS (mainly primary care) a solution? How is this helping? What else can be done which is more sustainable and won't cost tax payers a fortune?
Are the food manufacturers to blame (low fat but high sugar)? Why isn't this a problem in other European countries (Scandinavian for example)?

Obesity wasn't a problem when I was at growing up. I ate chips. I ate junk food. About once a week tops. Most of the time, my parents cooked normal, real food. No need to go on a diet. Mince and dumplings, pies, plenty of vegetables, etc, all homemade.

I suppose 'back then' people got the bus, walked most places and had manual jobs.

Today we have escalators, cars and deskjobs. I would suspect also people eat more often due to having more access to luxury foods like crisps and snacks. Thesedays people need to actively find exercise and people are too lazy and not proactive enough to do that.

I'm sure a link can be drawn between the rise of the office job & the rise (well expansion) of fatties.

I put on a couple of stone when I got an office job, hell I've had to start lifting to get rid of it.

Computer consoles have become the main entertainment for the youth of the past 20 years.
When i was a kid all i had to play with was the scars from my dads leather belt and a lump of coal that was thrown at me by the headmaster.

We need to invent a time machine and stamp out Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega and Atari and introduce forced labour conscription death camps as the main source of children's entertainment.

How many times do i have to reiterate this point???

Education and a social attitude shift. The NHS' role in the issue is to provide support and care, and information. The real 'blame' lies with parents, and individuals themselves - as well as corporations targeting vulnerable people and skewing facts (such as nutritional value, sources of food, etc).

And sports injuries, RSI, hernias, ...?

Don't trivialise the subject. Smoking, drinking and eating are all addictive. Smokers can just quit, with help. Alcoholics can go t-total, with help. Eaters cant just go (wait for it :D) cold turkey.

Sports injuries that are self inflicted, yes. It's the individuals fault they injured themselves. Having your ankle broken by someone else performing a two footed tackle, no. RSI? Yes. It's the individuals fault they injured themselves by not taking care of themselves to alleviate the problem. Same with hernias.

People who're obese because they can't stop filling themselves with food should not be treated on the NHS. Nor should any of them be treated on the NHS for diseases and illnesses that occur because of their eating.

Eaters can't go cold turkey? They can put the pie down and stop ****ing eating.

I know the term is banded around, but with regards to what I believe are entirely social issues; drinking, smoking, obesity and drugs we are quite simply nannies. Or fannies, whichever you prefer. Education is the only way to change anything here of course, but approaching the issue head on will never happen because everyone is suddenly a victim and has their reasons for the 'condition' they are in. Genuine (1%?) cases excluded of course.

I suppose that in answer to the thread title: they should advertise the issues more, and put things into context - you're lucky to be able to even get fat. I'm a firm believer that raising a child to be obese is also some form of neglect and or unfit parenting. Name and shame and all that jazz...

They should tax poor quality food and drink as much as they tax alcohol and cigarettes. But I foresee that if they do that people will complain they haven't enough money to live day to day instead of buying the cheaper healthier options that they have to prepare by hand.

What point? All I see is you rambling and ranting about Nazi type behaviour without specifically mentioning the Nazis so you don't Godwin the thread.

I dont even know what that means. Does that make me a bad forum user :(

Is it a reddit/4chan thing ? is 4chan still cool or am i too late ?

Yes. You're a bad forum user when you start rambling on about forced labour conscription death camps in an argument. Unless you're being sarcastic.

It's not a reddit or 4chan thing. And neither reddit nor 4chan are cool.

Me sarcastic?? Never!
I find it worrying that you would take anyone that types the **** i did serious, that shows more about you than i sir!

Good day !

Simple really, 10% less public funding per every extra stone, no capped amount.

Though in all seriousness, We should have something like Switzerland has, there for when you really need it, but if its a simple problem, you are paying for it.

It would stop the horrendous wastes of time GP's and Doctors have to put up with.

So you were intentionally trolling then by posting stuff to get a rise out of people? Wasn't someone suspended the other day for that?
