Is a Corsair H80 better than a scythe NINJA PLUS Rev.B for cooling

I have some temperature issues with my QX6700 as described in this thread . So I am considering a corsair Hydro cooler but before I get one I would like to know if it performs better than my current scythe NINJA PLUS Rev.B and will drop my temps. Or does it just perform the same and won’t make much of a difference. Also is the H80 (the H100 won’t fit in my case) the best one to go for or will some of the other models (H50, H60, H70) be a significant improvement over my scythe?
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
James

The H80 usually performs around the same as most high-end air coolers.

So I would imagine that it would be a better option if the money is there.

They do have issues though, it's dependent on how lucky you are with the one that you buy!

Thanks for the reply. Is my Scythe classed as a low end air cooler? I am tempted to spend the money on the H80 if it drops my temperatures. However if the other cheaper models such as the H50, H60 or H70 would be a reasonable improvement over my scythe then I would save the cash and get one of them instead. I have considered a better aircooler but space around my CPU socket is limited and the scythe was a tight fit so the hydro coolers seem like a good option.

Well the H80 has a double 120mm rad, so I would go for that if I was you.

The Sycthe was seen as one of the best air-coolers of the day, don't know how performance goes nowadays though.

Thanks for the reply. That’s good to hear that my scythe isnt that great a cooler anymore, it means the H80 should make a significant difference to my temps. I was still under the impression it was decent enough. Any rough guess’s as to how much the H80 would lower temps compared to the scythe?

Well cooling isn't really my forté, but here's some benchmarks I stole from AnandTech.

So yeah, that's not too bad I guess.

Not much a point in upgrading considering that the Scythe used to be considered as one of the best of it's day.

Thanks for the reply. So going by those results you think it would not be worth while going for the corsair H80 to replace my scythe?

No, don't buy either the H80 or H100, there is a problem with the manufacturing of the pump heads on these and although it has been identified it hasn't been fixed yet. So you are highly likely to get a loud one or even on that is dead on arrival. I've had both unfortunately.

Thanks for all the replies. I would consider an air cooler but the space around my CPU socket is limited it was a struggle to get the scythe installed correctly. Even then I couldn’t mount the fan pointing towards the exhaust of the case.

I'm just after anything really that will drop the temps on my QX6700 the temps are too high and I need to get them under control. I was even considering a new case with more fan slots as well as a new CPU cooler.

The Antec Kúhler H2O 920 looks quite decent but will it be an improvement over my scythe? I don’t want to spend the money on a new cooler to discover it hasn't dropped my temps a significant amount.

I have heard of the problems with the H80's and the H100's but I didn't realise the number of people having problems with them. I thought there were only a few, but from reading the forums it sounds like there are more dead ones than working ones :S

The problem with forums is that people only really post when they have problems, you are unlikely to hear from the people who have nothing to report, however my personal experiences with the H80 are not great and I could never recommend one. Maybe I was unlucky but even so my preference has always been towards a high end air cooler for less money resulting in better temps. However if room is tight around the CPU then it may be your best option, even if you won't get a recommendation on the H80 or H100 from me at the moment you would in certain circumstances should the pump issue be sorted.

The Antec Kuhler has had a few issues itself, I've heard of them leaking and Antec not helping at all. On the few occasions the Corsairs have leaked they have helped out so if you do get a self contained water cooler like this I'd buy a Corsair one even with the H80/H100 issues at the moment.

If you do go this route, get it from a decent retailer and if you do get a loud on just DSR it back to them, don't bother RMAing it with Corsair. It isn't a great or cheap experience, if I could have avoided it I would have.

Evidence for this please. Your are correct that there is a problem with the Coraisr H series, but on their forums they have said it is a small number of products. So small that they had difficulty reproducing it in their labs. So then, it's clear that the vast majority of units are unaffected. As has been alluded to in this topic, you don't hear from the satisified customers much. Only the customers with problems. So the natural ignorant assumption is that most of the H series are knackered.

To promulgate not buying a product on such non evidence based assumption/assertion is dishonest. The OP deserves a neutral well informed response to his question. I hope he reads everyones responses and then does his own research.

BTW, I have a H100 and it works as advertised with no problems and as such I would recommend it.

So you are basing your "evidence" on information supplied by Corsair's own staff on their own forum? Well that is going to be totally unbiased isn't it? I'm not being dishonest or ignorant and I really find it distasteful that you would suggest that.

No the problem isn't with the whole H series, it is with two specific models that share a pump head, the H80 and H100. You only have to google to find a significant number of people who are very unhappy with both the product and the service they have received from Corsair and I'm one of them.

Yes I'm bias but then so you are, you have a working product and therefore you recommend it. There is no way we could get accurate information on the number of faults against the numbers sold as Corsair like any company would not want to supply this information.

This isn't like me saying don't buy X companies product because I've had some faulty ones myself, this is me saying be cautious and prepared for problems if you buy X product because there is a known flaw in the design/manufacturing which has been identified and admitted to by the manufacurer and yet the fixed product hasn't actually reached any of the supply chain as far as I'm aware.

I agree he should do his own research. If you read my suggestion in my second post it does go onto say that if he was to buy a self contained water cooler, he should go with Corsair as they are the only company to assist the damage in the extremely unlikely event that it leaks. He can DSR it back to the retailer if he gets a loud one. Still an aircooler is a better option for most, aside from the fans there are no moving parts, nothing that can suddenly fail and cause the system to overheat.

And your implication is that they are lying then and instead of listening to the people who make and sell the product we should listen to people on internet forums who have nothing but opinion based on no evidence. Again, evidence please for your assertions. You made a statement, now back it up.

" So you are highly likely to get a loud one or even on that is dead on arrival."

Please back up your assertions. The default position is not to believe any claim that is unsupported.

I was simply suggesting that it may not be the best source of information, I'm not saying they are lying. Most people's evidence on internet forums is through their own experiences with the product. Sure there is no way to prove they owned or have owned the product but you can't just dismiss the whole issue based on that fact. Most of these people will be genuine owners with a genuine problem. Have a look on You Tube if you want to hear how loud these defective pumps can be.

All I'm doing is providing jamesd with the information he needs to make an informed decision, he may not of been aware that there was any problem with this series of products. Even Corsair admit to there being an issue however big or small. My original statement was perhaps a little over the top but when you've experienced this first hand twice then you tend to go that way.

I really don't understand why you are being so aggressive, I'm only trying to help jamesd. Things like this are extremely hard to prove as solid irrefutable evidence on the internet isn't something that is easy to source. That doesn't mean to say that this whole situation has been made up by me or anyone else posting on internet forums with these loud pumps. You only have to google to find hundreds of separate reports on this problem, many on Corsairs own forum and many on others like this one.
