Why the hell are crossbows legal in the UK?

They are big and slow to reload, there is no need to license it and thank god we haven't. Laws in this country are generally to oppressive as they are.

I actually considered buying a Ghost 400 as a weapon for personal (house) defence. They are an absolute beast of a thing and could in no way be taken out and used for some random weapon for causing havoc with. In fact most archery clubs don't even want to entertain people with crossbows of this power.

Actually watched a video of a guy shooting Wild Bores in a forest with one of them. At one point there were 2 bores in his line of sight - the bolt went straight through the first one, and actually killed the second one behind it as well

Don't think you could do that with many of the FAC guns available.

This argument makes no sense.

I would much rather be hit 10 times with a sub 12 air gun than I would once with a 130FtLbs cross bow (complete with hunting tips, which are legal in this country).

There's no need to ban every weapon, it would be pretty hard for someone to go on a rampage with a crossbow though and if someone just wanted to kill someone then a knife would be easier.
Firearms should be restricted though, as they can cause mass damage very easily. I think the government is being a bit oppressive about these things and I think it would be a sensible decision to have government run shooting clubs with access to many weapons with a fee.

So, could you hunt vermin (rat/pigeon) with this legally?
With land owners permission and a safe distance away from roads/homes, much like air rifles.
