Apple becomes most valuable firm of all time

The reason behind all the above is to limit the scope for compatibility and software errors causing issues with the device which either renders it inoperable or results in repeated crashes.

Which works great, because afterall in an emergency I need a phone to act like a phone.

I can't remember the last time my iPhone failed to function as intended or crashed, however i can remember several occasions when my Android devices have crashed.

I fail to see how being able to use bluetooth handsfree or bluetooth/USB tethering can brick a phone. In fact, in all my years of doing the above I have never done it, nor found a way to make it possible.

I can, however, see how running out of battery at 3PM can affect my ability to make and receive phone calls, emails and text messages. Which becomes a little troublesome when the workday is far from over.

Never had that issue, but then again my phone connects to my car with 0 issues, i have no need to stick a headset in my ear.

Battery life wise, again never an issue, lasts longer than any of my HTC's did.

Data plans and the ability to teather are as much of a network restriction as they are phones.

This seems odd as I've never come across an apple product that had any practical value whatsoever... hmm...

So an iPod Classic which is one of the only portable HDD music players int he world, is not practical?
The Apple TV is pretty good as well, and the iPhone is great. Both don't suit my needs in the slightest but both are good products

I'm not an Apple fanboy in the slightest, however even I can see their merits

Just a shame their products are all design over usefulness.

the design aids their usefulness (presuming we're talking about the software and hardware combined)

iOS is very intuitive and has been mimicked by others, the original ipad wheel was a great idea... the laptops etc.. perhaps a bit expensive then again if you like OSx... also I guess they look good and tend to have a long battery life - resale value tends to be better than most too if you like to upgrade frequently

I don't have any allegiance to a particular brand but I do find the way some people choose to bash apple a bit silly.

If you like shiny things, Apple are awesome.

Edit: Something actually on topic, wasn't there a lot of shareholder discontent about the amount of cash Apple was holding?

not all shareholders have long term interests - I guess some might want fat dividend payouts

maybe they could put the cash towards an R&D project aimed at re-animating Steve Jobs

You get the latest software in updates. You root an iphone to use unsigned software. Which is unfortunately the way I see the OS X platform going.

Whoosh. You missed he point. I was referring to Android phones.

As for OSX. Well of course Apple are going to try to push people down the Mac App Store route. However for most people that's a benefit just like the App Store on iOS is. For geeks like me having access to the BSD/UNIX. Ore underneath is brilliant (unless you do a sudo reboot when drunk - wrong console. Though I was on the SSH session :D ) and unlikely to change anytime soon.

Not only would locking down OSX to the same level as ios not really be practical it would damage their image too much. Don't make the mistake that copying the good from ios somehow means the two will merge*

* Well iOS is based on the OSX kernel but you get the point.

Well someone has to, that is after all the whole point of capitalism, if a tad forced.

Not while I have a very cheap and easy to use mp3 player which may not have the capacity of the ipoo'd classic but does the job besides who needs all their music with them at all times it's not like you'd be able to listen to it all in a day let alone the few minutes you need it for personally i carry around 100 or so tracks on my mp3 player and change them every now and then so the choice for me is overpriced over specced fasion accessory vs. cheap easy still slightly overspecced useful device... I'm going with option 2.

Who would have thought that this thread would turn into a apple vs. thread.

:p

Because that's what happens with Apple threads. It would also have happened if it was an Android thread as the Apple fanboys are as bad as the Android fanboys.... (lets face it, although there are other companies out there like MS, the biggest rivalry is Apple/Android (in one form or another)

What I don't get is that, IMHO, Apple fanboys don't seem to acknowledge that Android has come on leaps and bounds whereas Apple seem to have rested on it's laurels (I do reserve the right to change this opinion when the iPhone 5 is launched however)

Does it go against the Apple fan's mantra so badly to admit that other products can be as good or, God forbid, better at some things than Apple?

As I said, my opinion may change come iPhone5. Apple's Tic-Toc release sequence indicate that the iPhone5 should be a big improvement over the 4S and not just some minor stuff like a bigger screen or slightly better battery life etc....

Then you get plain silly comments like this -

I love having a phone I need to "root" to get the latest software running on it. Not.

No actual attempt to bring a proper argument into it - just post an inflammatory statement and run. He is either deliberately just being a troll or genuinely hasn't a clue what he is talking about....

Yes it was inflammatory. It was an example of the kind of crap any Apple threads outside of the two dedicated forums gets - just reversed.

One thing though, with the exception of the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7* the statement is true. You have to rely on the carrier giving you access to the latest version of Android or install a custom ROM (not what most mobile owners are wanting or willing to do). Even an iPhone 3GS is getting iOS6 on release day.

* Having got a Nexus 7 I can say it is a great device, Android 4.1 is a very nice mature mobile operating system. The apps on the other hand...

Wow, one post to troll...

Impressive GD...

Hardly surprising really, they've got massive reserves of cash and are making masses more...

Not sure how it'll go though, it depends how post-jobs apple is at staying true to the values that made it amazing...

I like to carry around all my music and podcasts at all times, because I much prefer to just plug in my iPod let iTunes sync it all automatically and I'm done.
I can't be arsed to faff around with dragging and dropping folders.

So the choice for me to have an excellent and useable music player vs. something cheaper which I have to manually do stuff to is very easy for me. I'm going to go for option 1.

The only product that comes near to the iPod is the Cowon range, however their ease of use is shocking which is why I returned mine. Sound quality was perfect but the way you need to operate it was crap

your personal preference i suppose but logically apple and their products just doesn't make sense to me financially speaking. Plus if Mr. Jobs the "Great Innovator" never came back to rescue apple from the brink I really doubt we'd of heard from them ever again... and also now that he has gone for good I'm still not so certain we'll be hearing about them 20-40 years down the line.
