ASUS Maximus Gene V. The right choice for me?

The reason I ask is I had an i5-2500k which needed a big voltage increase to hit 4.5/4.6 and even then the system wasn't particularly stable. I've since replaced the 2500k with a 3570k which also requires a fair few volts to hit 4.5/4.6 and is equally as unstable.

Do you think I've just had 2 mediocre chips or could the motherboard be the limiting factor? The mobo is an ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3. Or might the ram (8gb G-Skill Ripjaws X 1600) also be a factor on the 4.4 limit?

I'm buying the Gene V tonight anyway because it looks so damn good and because of 8Packs enthusiasm for it. :D

The chip will ultimately be the limiting factor to be honest as everything these days is on the Chip. Also cooling counts a lot with the Ivy. Even my 6.350ghz chip is not amazing on air or water.

The gene is very good board though and works well with G.SKILL so stability should not be a problem at all now providing you set everything up correctly. Infact stability is where the gene does excel. The bios is excellent too. Fire off any questions you have and I will try help.

I have a lot of experience with the Gene and although the Formula and Extreme are better boards overall the Gene really is way ahead in its class. It helped me come second in the G.SKILL cup a national clocking competition and has more posts on HWbot than any other Z77 board by far. Its not so popular among pro clockers without good reason.

Whats the batch of your 3570K???

I wanted a new motherboard anyway so it won't be a wasted purchase even if it makes no difference.

The batch is 3219B563 (Costa Rica)

I just ordered same mobo, upgrade from a z77-d3h.

Let us know how you get on with it mate. Did you buy it for a red and black theme or just because it's awesome? :D

Edit: I've just noticed the thread you started about the dodgy PCI-E on your other mobo ... so that answers that.

All of the above, Ill be needing tips when it comes :)

Cheers 8 Pack. I'm pretty sure I'll have some overclocking questions when I get the board.

I've just ordered it. I guess I won't get it until Wednesday even with next day delivery because it's a bank holiday tomorrow. Oh well, it'll be a good test of my patience.

I'd rather have had the Formula same as you mate but didn't quite have the pennies for it.

To be honest the reason i went with formula was the option of running 2 x of the asus gtx680 triple slot cards in the future.

Together with the looks and OC capability!

Gene was on my list also , but decided wait and save a bit more!

Well I might aswell get the ball rolling.

What would be good settings for a decent everyday overclock for the 3570k on a V Gene with decent cooling ? (K2 doom)

Currently running at 4.2ghz with with no problem. Idle between 30-35c but I think the cpu is auto winding down, as the clock goes up and down. As far as I know there has been no voltage increase as I just used the auto overclock from the Windows app.

List your RAM part mate please.

Around 4.6 with decent cooling after that its all down to the Chip and patience. Good chip 4.9 -5.0ghz. Good RAM and memory controller DDR2666+.

What I think I might do to help you all is a set of Bios screen ***** to work from for say 4.6ghz including the DRAM page and the Digi power section as its too time consuming to keep typing all the settings out.

Then tweak for individual differences as they arise.

Samsung Green 2 x 4gb.

Screenshots of those settings would be a extremely useful starting point.

After that I/we could work on some key tweaks to try and improve things.

Thanks!! ;)

PSU is Corsair AX650, just in-case.

This is with what I have in at the moment which is 4 x 4gg 2133 RipjawZ. a lot of the settings will remain the same for the Sammy apart from obviously the RAM timings and speed.

Here is the rock stable 4.6 settings.

For Sammy 2 x 4gb 2133mhz go 9-12-12-28 1T Mode1 or 10-12-12-28 1T Mode1 to start with. I had a tuned 9-12-12-21 2400mhz 1T profile for them so I am sure cas 10 at 2133 is easy.
