There, I said it!! :D

** PLEASE NO SPOILERS **

I'm now playing FF X for the first time. I'm just at the bit where you enter the 'Calm Lands' and I know nothing about the rest of the storyline or bosses or optional baddies (something like the Weapons maybe???) or the best Summons or weapons, so please don't spoil it for me :)

I've played VII three times now, and I love it, I'm not saying anything negative about it and when I hear people say it's the best I've believed them.
It's fantastic, why wouldn't I??

But now I'm playing X, and it's got a brilliant story so far!!
The roster is a little bloated, I don't really care about Wakka or use him much, and LuLu is useful but I wouldn't be sad if she snuffed it, but Auron's interesting and I'm rooting for Yuna.
Tidus/Cloud is a bit of a douche, but I'm still on his side :)
I'm waiting for Kimhari to do something super cool but he hasn't yet... Stabbing Seymore was pretty decent but it didn't achieve much...

The 'scale' of the storyline's great, the music's great, the Summons and boss fights are great so far. Also, for an old title, it looks the business!!

The game has been 100% linear so far and I'm only just at a bit where I can start doing stuff I choose (hunting monsters for some arena right now), yet the story has been compelling enough that I haven't been fussed.

The only gripe I have, and it's probably my fault, is the sphere grid.
No idea what the beginner grid is like but I chose the more complicated one because I assumed it wouldn't be that hard to use.
Playing blind has led to some poor choices and I currently have Tidus/Cloud with the middle level elemental magics, Kimhari with the top ones and Yuna and LuLu, my proper magic users only have the basic ones. Oops!!
Could be a bit clearer and more forgiving/user friendly, but maybe the basic one is?

IMO the story is less convoluted and more compelling, maybe the characters are a little more likeable too.
I think they're both equally challenging, not too easy but not died more than once on any particular part yet. Had some close calls so it keeps it fun.

I still love VII, I'll probably play it again as soon as Im done with X, but I have to say I think X is my new favourite!

Discuss :)

(Oh, and if anyone says VIII is anything other than rubbish, you're wrong!! :p)

It's not hard to beat VII, in my opinion. :p

Glad you're enjoying it. I know a lot of people who hate X, but I quite liked it. Blitzball isn't quite Tetra Master, but I got quite good at it and there are a lot of pretty places in the game. I didn't think it was going to work without the traditional world map, but I was pleasantly surprised. :)

To be honest I don't play Blitzball, it took three goes to win the game you have to play and I've not been inclined to play again since!!

Nah final fantasy 6 on the US Snes was my fav, im trying to get into ff X, but the crappie blitzball and Sin crap, and your mind is poisoned with Sin etc is doing my head in.... Mind you i'm near the start where we pray in some temple before a blitzball match.

But seriously does this game getting any better cos im mega bored....

You haven't given it enough time yet imo, it does get better, but i wouldn't say it was better than 7

Complete X first before assigning it your favourite Final Fantasy.

That's a fair point... But I already prefer the story here, the gameplay is your standard FF gameplay.
As above, I'm not a fan of the 'sphere grid' style of levelling up, but I can live with it.

So unless it gets crap half way through, or the ending sucks, then it's winning....

Nostalgia can warp our impressions of games.. However i think a lot has to do with when it was you played the game in relation to your gaming life and what you have come to expect of new games. I got lost in FF VII but only a year after i got it as a present with my PSX as i had never really played any RPG's before. It was also the first game i had completed that had a proper end. I would normally just play sports/racing games and the sense of achievement was pretty big at the time.

No game since has really given me the buzz i got from VII but there have been lots of great games since.

Earlier this year after picking up crisis core i went back and played through VII on my psp. Not only was i still able to enjoy it i was able to get a lot more done and defeat the weapons in a much reduced time and thoroughly enjoyed it despite the very aged graphics. On that note i struggled to get on with crisis core but persevered and really enjoyed it in the end and finished off the whole VII related orgy with watching the extended cut of advent children.

No other final fantasy game has really interested me but i know if i could get past the first 10 or so hours i would enjoy it. But with gaming these days it is hard to force yourself past that sort of barrier with so much instant gratification available.

You can get your characters stronger by using the beginners sphere grid, for future reference.

Really wish I'd used that to be honest. Stupidly assumed that as I'm very familiar with the FF franchise that I'd be alright to use the advanced one.
To be fair, if I started from scratch now I'd probably be alright to use it and I'd certainly make better choices. The problem was that at the start I had no idea what it was all about and that there should be some planning so I just started arbitrarily getting upgrades. Eventually you're committed to certain path :(

Doing my best to rectify things now :)
