Mega drive, so many excellent games and one of them being the epic toejam and earl!

But i have to say Super Mario World > Any Sonic.

The SNES isn't just better than the MD, it's pound for pound the best console ever made.

Mario kart
Mario world
Super tennis
SF2 turbo
International superstar soccer
Pilot wings
Star fox
F-zero
Donkey kong country
Metriod
Punch out

It's no contest. The mega drive looked good before the SNES arrived then it was blown out the water.

Snes by far, I had a megadrive and then a grey import Snes, while the megadrive looked nice when it first came out, the Snes and the mode 7 stuff just blew me away at the time, probably my most favourite console.

I was actually old enough to earn a living and was fortunate enough to have both back then. For me it was easily the SNES. tenfold TBH. I had a US grey import, so that i could play SFII and Mario Kart in 60hz full screen, rather than the borderline 50hz PAL versions. I remember playing all day long with friends during the times when there was nothing else to do. The SNES holds some of my greatest gaming memories, and this is even taking into considering being a kid during the Speccy/C64 and Amiga / ST era's.

Anyone who played SF2 on the SNES and MD would have to be mental to think the MD version was better! Even my die hard Genesis loving friends conceded on that. Music wise, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger more than match the best of Sonic ;)

Both consoles had great games, and both were stronger in particular genres, but the SNES just powered over the MD by sheer number of top games. I still regularly play the SNES :)

Gunstar heroes was great though. Did anyone here play Genral Chaos on the MD, btw?

SNES, but anyone who played the uk pal version doesn't know what they were missing, the US and jap ntsc versions were far superior. Those borders and slowdown were horrid.
Playing SF2 on the uk machine was like wading through treacle.

Not too much of an issue these days. Just 60hz it and be done with it. Most Pal games open full screen and run full speed without glitching.

Anyone know when that first came around (60hz mod), was it about when the snes was new or was it figured much later? Lockout disable I assume was done early as certain games checked to see if the chip was enabled or turn off.

Phantasy Star and Shining Force series show that even the Mega Drive has some JRPG/Tactical RPG also. Phantasy Star was also one of the big three JRPG franchises back in the day next to Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy and I'm sure it had the distinction of being the first JRPG out in the west too beating the others.

Really? Because the Mega Drive version is a lot more closer to the arcade Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting than people think. Both are the essentially the exact same games under different names associated with the arcade versions.

SNES version may have better sound effects and colours, but the music, modes and options available off the bat goes to the Mega Drive version. SNES still uses it's previous home port World Warrior music. Then there are also plenty of examples of "prototype" versions of the Mega Drive music sounding much better and matching even closer to the arcade versions, thpugh they came at a cost.

SNES' sound chip has the advantage of being new, digital and producing better instruments. But there are also advantages to the Mega Drive's older analogue FM chip, which have been used throughout the 80's on other systems. It's cliche to keep saying it, but look at the Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage trilogy for what such an old chip is capable of. Haven't really seen any SNES games that have pretty authentic early 90's club dance type music.

The arcade versions of World Warrior, Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting all had the same music as they were all CPS1 games, so there was no need to change the music between the SNES World Warrior and Turbo. It wasn't until Super Street Fighter 2 in the arcade that they started using CPS2 with QSound to change the music.

The sound on the Mega Drive versions was just plain awful and sounded even more dated in SSF2. Apart from that the Mega Drive ports were pretty good, especially when you had the 6 button pad.

Yeah I know but it was kind of a cheap and easy job on their part for the SNES versions. Even so, both SNES and Mega Drive's music's lack the speed and awesome bass punch of the original CPS-1 sound, but comparing the two console versions, in terms of the synthesizer tone and instruments, Mega Drive was still the closest, though really lacks the bass.

I don't even bother with the home ports of Super/New Challengers because I thought both were pretty bad either way, all these missing sound glitches and such, urgh. And don't even get started on Zero/Alpha 2 on the SNES. Don't get me wrong, it's impressive they even attempted it, but my god was it slow ass.

I totally agree. The New Challenger ports weren't that great comapred to the aracde version, I don't think the SNES one even said "Round 1, Fight!". I have seen the Alpha port but never played it but it did look awful.
