Focus 1.0 Litre EcoBoost

It's great to see companies doing this 'new stuff' with engines.

120 odd bhp in a 1.0 focus will be plenty for a lot of families, but agree with Fox in that going for the 1.6 for £200 more is almost a total no brainer. I'd imagine 'with a load' the 1.6 will give better real world fuel figures as you won't have to push it anywhere near as hard. Near to 180 BHP in something that weight will also be more than quick enough for the average joe. Subject to Ford still producing a decent handling car, this will be a really nice drive.

I wonder if the 1.6 would give better economy? We're not comparing it to a wheezy 60hp 1.0 litre, it's got a decent amount of power to get the car going at normal road speeds - so shouldn't need thrashing.

I do agree though, I'm really quite interested by a lot of the new technology that the different manufacturers are trying out nowadays.

Currently looking at getting a focus, new or close to new. Seen a 61 plate standard 1.6 125 zetec for £12900 with 1000 miles. Or i can look to get a new one with the 1.0 125 ecoboost engine for ~£14800.

It's a no brainer right? Get the 61 plate?

Aren't the 1.6 ones awful with fuel? Depends on how far you drive each year to be honest and also down to your personal choice. I can't imagine a 1300kg kerb weight car having a decent mpg with the 1.6 I would bet you are using the upper rev range quite a lot.

Looking at specs, it would need to be at least Titanium trim for me.

Makes little sense as a used buy though. These are going to get very attractive from a running cost point of view once they start appearing in the used market and we get past that initial depreciation hit.

Imagine the shock, a single seater with no weight and tiny engine coupled with a turbo is mega quick.

I've seen that formula someplace before.

Always found it odd that they never put this engine into a Ka.

It would be epic in the new Ka...won't ever happen though...

Why couldn't it be, the Evo X FQ-400 has over 200bhp per litre?

But the Evo has about 50bhp per cylinder. The ford engine has nearly 70bhp per cylinder. Just seems extremely highly strung.

Doesn't the Evo need servicing every 2 miles*

*exaggeration

An Evo is a V8?

Sorry what warranty is on that Formula Ford thing ? yet you think raising the service frequency is relevant on a manufacturer spec car.

It is safe to say that there are going to be some differences in the reliability of the 205bhp version compared to the 125bhp production version to accompany the over 60% increase in power output. This is irrelevant anyway, because they have said nothing about selling the 205bhp version.

What I found impressive was the average speed achieved: 105mph over ~13 miles is pretty awesome. Does anyone know who the driver was?

Nick Tandy.

The official press release is here.

I'm impressed at how much power can be eeked out of that engine. Everything in it's design is geared towards being as efficient as possible, so it's not a major surprise it can be pushed for this kind of power (remember production models have overboost available), but the lap time is astonishing.
