HD8800 Series Coming

Just bought a 7970 then this thread appears. Hopefully only the top end 8 series card will beat it.

If there is any truth at all to the 8850 being comparible to a GTX 670, and for 199$, then boy do AMD have a winner on their hands.

Part of me thinks it's too good to be true, however.

No way! The graphic performance increase has slowed down quite a bit over the last few gens while price has consistantly increased...wouldn't want the improvement to slow down even further for the sake people that buy 7970 now and goes "please please please don't let the 88xx cards be faster than the 7970!" The faster the next gen cards the better I say. Bring it!

But yea as above...it's most likely too good to be true...both I still finger cross that the 8850 would be at least on par with the 7950, but by all mean take away the computing performance (as for gamers they just consume more power and make the card hotter).

you'll be waiting 6-8 months before amd sort their drivers out before you see a performance gain like that.

**runs and hides in a bunker**

:p

Pitcarn is an incredible card efficiency wise, its only problem is its too small for a high end gpu. If they can make a card around the 7970 size - the bus - overhead for very early 28nm process they can start looking at a very very efficient card.

Though from that table the huge increase in both SP and DP performance in only 800million transistors is almost unbelievable, just about possible though. THe whole core isn't shaders so if that 800million transistors was almost entirely shaders then you'd get a very unbalanced increase in performance in the favour of shader power. Likewise its only 270mm2 suggested there, but with 15% of the die size dedicated to fighting low yields and spacing out parts to reduce heat/power then you end up with a huge amount of waste. By the "next" gen of cards, or the refresh you can essentially claim most of that 15% back. A pitcarn without that 15% wasted would actually end up being close to 180mm2... then a jump to 270mm2 looks relatively a lot bigger, a 50% increase in die size rather than 30% die size increase 212mm2 up to 270mm2 looks.

Nvidia may/may not have that kind of die size space available to them. Firstly theirs was much much bigger than pitcarn to start, secondly their low yields last gen were down to not adding overhead to allow for low yields and I wouldn't be surprised if supposedly not great yields of the GK104(not bad either) weren't similar.

ultimately AMD's biggest problem in the current gen wasn't having a card around 300mm2. Rectifying that while also having the mature process advantages should lead to a really good card overall.

So it's got more transistors, same 28nm process, larger die, core and mem are faster and it uses less power, I doubt it.

Personally its not the more transistors, the larger die, faster core and memory or even the using less power that I don't believe, but all that for 20-25% cheaper yeah right.

Somebody has been pulling figures out of their behind, but at least unlike some previous rumours for past generations most of those figures actually sound plausible.

160 GFlops to 246 GFlops isn't 60%, 60% would be 256 GFlops but that could just be a typo.

Just some rumours to generate lots of hits on their site. You can be sure that the specs will change many times before now and the release date.
