I need to get into and out of London (to the O2) one Friday evening coming up, and I was thinking of driving up to the edge of London, parking up and then getting the Tube into London and across to the O2. I will be coming from Southampton so up the M3.

Any suggestions on where to go to be able to both park the car for a day and get the tube into London easily (i.e. an outer London Tube station with a long stay carpark :)).

Cheers

Why not simply get the train from Southampton? It's a direct line and often only stops at Winchester and Woking so will probably be even quicker than driving!

The train is quicker, but not cheaper, and the last train that gets us back here means leaving the O2 by about 10pm, which is cutting it tight for a show starting at 8pm.

I reckon Osterley is your best bet coming from that direction. Plenty of spaces and £4.50 a day.

My local station :)

I've just come back from there 10 mins ago after going into London. Getting ot the O2 would involve a few changes.

OP - You can park on my driveway if you mean this Friday (i'll be abroad), it's a 4-5 minute walk from the station. Or you could just pony up the £4.50 :)

I think the last tube is about midnight or around then.

Lol, thanks Vanilla! But its not for a few weeks yet.

A mate has suggested Richmond. Just 1 change from the District to the Jubilee at Westminster.

Getting the tube back from the O2 means I have to leave at about midnight to be able to not miss the last connecting trains to anywhere else.

Funnily enough I was just in Richmond last night.

There is an NCP car park right next to the Tube/Train line so aim to park there. Very convenient.

Agreed it might be cheaper to drive.

Last train is 5 past midnight (this Friday) so you would actually have from at least 11pm surely?

Last train is 23:05. The 5 past midnight one takes 6 hours!

Edit: hmm, not to Central... There are actually better trains to Central...

Hmm if you drive and park all the way in Osterley or Richmond then you might as well drive that little bit further and just park direct at the O2 in car park 2? It costs like £7 for the entire evening.

Whats it like driving into the O2? Is it going to be busy and bung an extra couple of hours on the drive?

Having looked at trains to Eastleigh though, I can get trains from Waterloo any time up to just gone midnight, which is a lot better than I thought, so I might just do that. Going to be over £60 for 2 to get the train though.

I've driven to the O2 a few times now and much prefer driving to train. I've only ever driven on Saturdays around 4-5pm though. As you're going on a Friday, you would have to time it right or plan your routes around the congestion charging zones.

I live in Farnborough (Jc4 on M3) and the fastest route for me is M25 > A20 > A102. Never come across any traffic going that way. I've also tried going via the A3 through central London but that was a nightmare.

Cheers, I'll have a look at that. I need to decide if were going to spend any time in London before going to the O2 first.

Stick the postcode W14 9HY into your sat nav.

Park there (or anywhere near there in the residential bit) for free and jump onto the Piccadilly Line from barons Court to Green Park, then the Jubilee to the 02.

There's plenty of residential places central that you can park for free on Friday evening and over the weekend. I'm in Camden and you can park on the road after 6 on Friday until 8.30 on Monday.

Oh forgot to mention..... If you do drive to the O2, be prepared to hang around in the car park for 1hr+ before being able to get out.... Unless you RUN back to your car immediately after your show, start engine and speed off :p

If you travel by tube, it will also be very packed. You may not be able to get onto the first or even second train that arrives on the platform. So just bear that in mind when you plan your return journey.

That is a good point I hadn't thought about, cheers.

But at least the roads will be very quiet when he drives home. So he will be able to make up the lost time. :p
