Iphone 5 why so underwhelming?

The camera hardware is the same i think, they have just improved the software last i heard.

They made it thinner and wait for it........... a new lense cover :D.

Seriously thou, I think a lot has to do with the amount of leaks, it was a brand new design but we all had detail videos of it, the new port, saw that. 4" :O boring, it goes on and on. If they had "double down" and kept it locked then I think it would have been much better.

Personally I was let down by the battery life, it is more or less the same but with LTE, which I suppose is good, but they could have kept it just a think but with a Razr Maxx type battery. That would make me really want it, but till then I'm stuck in limbo edging closer to closer to a new Nexus purely cause of JB and the ecosystem.

For me it was so utterly lacking because of what Nokia and their real innovation has done in the 920.
They have brought so much more to the table both in terms of camera hardware, screen development, but really making strides with their own in house Apps. You cant help but notice now that Apple only have a 2% R&D unit working now.

I dont think the leaks issue stands up either at all, we had that HUGE leak when they lost the prototype, and I still went and bought it watching the presentation.
I think thats a copout really.

Full sRGB colour
Tweaked optics
4" screen
18% thinner
20% lighter
Better battery life
Improved antenna design
LTE support (albeit limited)
Improved bundled headphones
New OS (a lot of handy features like do not disturb etc)
Custom CPU optimised for software

Not earth shattering, (I would have liked to see NFC to integrate with the passbook app) but hardly a minor update. As pointed out, almost everything they can change, has been changed!

Besides a taller screen the iPhone 5 may as well be an iPhone 4, yes there's been lots of tiny improvements to battery life, microphone etc but I'm already well served in those areas so what if they're 10% better? That's not going to change or improve how I use the phone especially and certainly at the price they're asking.

It's a shame they didn't do more to improve iOS as I feel that's the area that needs the most work and probably the only thing which will bring me back to iPhone.

It isn't disappointing or underwhelming. For the most part, people just had unrealistic expectations; they always do (see S3).

iOS is fine, it doesn't need a massive overhaul, it's ridiculously popular and people (maybe not some of you on here) like how it operates.

They improved most areas of the phone, finally introduced a bigger screen, etc. See EVH's post above.

The battery life should be a good improvement - at least I hope it is. If it is, then I'll be replacing my S3 with one, as long as it doesn't have any major flaws. :)

Unfortunately some people were inevitably going to bash it regardless of what Apple did, it's a shame that the tribal AMD/Nvidia mentality has spilled into the phone market now. Sadly it's born out of aggressive purchase justification.

Apple ticked all of my boxes except for NFC - which wasn't an important one - with the iPhone 5. I thought they might drop the 16GB model and have 32GB as the minimum but other than that the iPhone 5 is what I wanted and expected.

I am not bashing the iphone 5 btw , just for me personally the nokia 920 is more phone for the money , I am like that I don't care about the os really but having an iphone for a while now I fancy a change ;) apps I don't use I find I download them , then delete them lol phone hardware ie camera and memory is better for me ;)

The only noticeable thing increased is the screen size. Their new antenna design didn't turn out quite so well on the iPhone 4.

I wouldn't expect amazingly better battery life since there is the bigger screen.

iOS 6 is also available on the iPhone 4S isn't it not? So that's why people are mostly saying it's underwhelming even though there has been a lot of changes. A lot of which will be barely noticeable because the 4S was good anyway!

The 920 looks great as well, I'll be picking one up (again, as long as it doesn't have any problems).

Based on what criteria? I had two points when referring to iOS, the first being it's hard to see iOS 6 as a unique selling point for iPhone 5 when you'll get it on older handsets and just because it's doing well enough now doesn't mean anything, just look at RiM and Nokia for prime examples of what complacency gets you.

Based on the sales figures, general popularity and the opinions of people I know, not people on here as it's a tiny market segment (hardware enthusiasts).

It's like saying Android is stagnating because Jelly Bean is similar to ICS (it is), it's evolutionary and that's what is important.

Radical change would upset your average consumer, Apple were never going to do it.

Whether or not they are being complacent is a matter of opinion really, I think they probably are a little bit, but it's no big deal.

robbo I know your going for a 920 , smart guy , but what is driving force to make you? I think the features that have been announced are great , but Microsoft and nokia need to get the message out there now! to get a good foot hold .
I cant understand all these cloack and dagger crap that Microsoft is pulling , why keep features silent unless thay have a killer thing . it is not as if in 4 weeks android or apple will clone then , and I am sure they have enough lawyers for that crap ? lol

So far, I've struggled to understand Microsoft's marketing strategy when it comes to Windows Phone.

I think they'll really push it when the 920 is available.

Why am I getting one? I like Nokia's hardware and I like a lot of the WP8 features, I've always liked WP7, but I've been waiting for the apps to catch up so I skipped the Lumia 800 (I have the Omnia 7).

They said 225 hours standby iirc

In battery run down tests it lasted over 14 hours compared to the S3s 9 running the same test, so whilst its standby time isn't as good it lasts a lot longer when you're actually using it.

The battery life does look to be impressive, in those types of the tests the iPhone has always been a head, but I have found it general on par was you factor in the stand by time, but this time I'm hoping it is still out.

I know this is the Android area of the forum but it seems that the people here bash iPhones incessantly and without fair comparison, it seems unless Apple released an Andriod phone no one would give it more than 1/5.
It seems that the iPhone is judged at so much of a higher benchmark than any other phone. People are slating it for not having NFC or wireless charging... Seriously? I have never seen anyone use or want either of those features any yet people seem to think iPhone is unusable because of the lack of them.

Meanwhile Apple produces one of the best built, thinnest, lighest, fastest phone with the best battery life. With by far the most apps, highest quality apps.
Apple has undisputably the best customer service and highest customer satisfaction.
Sure they cost slightly more but people are happy with their purchases.
So after all this they get called 'idiots' and 'sheeple' for buying what is consistantly one of the best 5 phones available, it's just silly.

And before it's said I'm not a fanboi or whatever they're called, yes i own an iphone but i considered all types of phone and settled on the iphone because i want a phone that just works, plays my music over bluetooth in my car, works fast, is decent quality and has a decent battery life.

Is that from Engadget? Probably best to double check on any claims they make.

It's held to a higher standard because it's the market leader and Apple do make magical claims as to their products. Kinda hard to miss features you don't have too but no one is stupid enough to claim its unusable because it's lacking them. Personally I'd rather have wireless charging than a new dock connector but maybe that's just me. ;)

So what? There's a ton of companies making great products, I could happily live with anything running Android, iOS or Windows phone. Your claim about the battery life is incorrect and despite iOS probably being the best for quality apps it's mostly down to third party developers doing a good job.

A satisfied customer isn't necessarily an informed one and I wasn't blown away by their customer service when my Apple account got hacked, money stolen and I had to find out from the credit card company. Oh sure that's an exceptional situation but those occurrences are often what a lot of people form their opinions of about companies, when my iPhone 4 died on a software update besides keeping me waiting for an extra hour when I booked an appointment they gave me a replacement fairly quickly (amusingly the replacement set had a home button which sticks all the bloody time but like I said experiences vary). Is it different if you run into problems with say Samsung? Do they send round someone to beat you until you fix it yourself or something?

And before it's said I'm not a fanboi or whatever they're called, yes i own an iphone but i considered all types of phone and settled on the iphone because i want a phone that just works, plays my music over bluetooth in my car, works fast, is decent quality and has a decent battery life.

No need to get defensive! There's nothing wrong with being a fan.

But it's not the thinnest, or the lightest, nor does it have the best battery life. It gets slated because it simply doesn't stack up to the other phones that a lot of people desire now, especially so in this area of the forum. And rightly so, if people are looking for it to do something, and it doesn't, of course it will get slated for not doing it, that's simple fact.

As for your last paragraph, not a single one of those features is unique to an iphone, nor does it do all of them better than a lot of other offerings. Your post really comes across as badly as a lot of the android "fanboi" posts do, you're just arguing from the opposite team.
