Plea to ban motorists washing their cars in the street.

These laws ban drivers from washing their cars in the street because of the damage it is believed this can do to the environment with cleaning chemicals entering the water supply.

That's why.

Professional places have their own drainage systems in place to stop the chemicals entering the water system.

I would imagine they (garages etc) drain to foul water rather than street drains which are more likely to be classed as storm water.

I did think that both were treated in the same way in the UK though.

Storm water can be directly flowed into rivers/streams in some places, but in towns it seems to join the general foul water for treatment.

The ban on car washing in the street is in force in a number of German towns and cities, such as Dresden, where restrictions are in force to keep the sewerage system clean of the detritus generated by the activity.
Other parts of the country ban street car washing on Sundays because it is seen as disturbing a day of rest, much in the same way as playing a radio at full volume and mowing the lawn.

I know these nutjobs have to have their air time every now and then, but seriously... what on earth.

Most of the dirt on your car would normally end up on the ground anyway, as for the "oil" mentioned in the article, it really shouldn't be finding its way out of your car!

Oh and sorry for my oh so noisy bucket !

I translated the story into: Independent garages are failing and wants more people to go to them and pay £8 for a car wash.

If the government/petrol stations want to then pay for paint correction services then go right ahead :)

Are you seriously getting annoyed by laws from a country you don't live in?

Seeing as the article is trying to use them to justify the changes they desire here in the UK, I don't see how its somehow invalid to comment on them - its not like I am popping a vein about it, just commenting

Some already take precautions, IIRC Polished Bliss have a fancy wash mat that collects the water etc, can't remember exactly why but I'm sure it was stipulated by who ever they lease the unit from!

It's just how lobbying works, business is losing money and has to adhere to environmental policys that others don't including businesses offering exactly the same service so they lobby to have the law changed. Also Telegraph CSTTC, get me fires up in the morning

There is an environmental impact of cleaning your car around the brake dust iirc, old work was stopped from having valet services cleaning in the works car park as part of our environmental policy, so it just did it on the street outside. :p
