Sleeping Dogs performance

It's always been the same - even back when I used to record our kill videos in World of Warcraft. As I say - no idea why but then they're compressed and uploaded what was a poor framerate while recording looks remarkably smoother when compressed.

Smaller packets/info been processed so it wouldn't struggle as much.

Recording @30fps = nightmare. Render and upload to YouTube = lovely.
Like i said earlier in this post, my mate records at 30fps (well, plays the game at 30) but his videos are jems.

I've always wondered why he doesn't just drop the settings and play with a higher FPS. He'd be even "better" at BF etc.

Ran the demo the other night and enjoyed it rather a lot. Good frame rates with all maxed bar AA, as I had to use 'high' instead of extreme to get decent fps. Not bad for a Q6600 / gtx480. :)

Yeah, I also play on high AA, I can't really tell the difference between high and extreme AA but extreme AA just causes more heat and noise, and the minimum frame rates are not acceptable. Extreme AA is much more demanding than high.

Why does Extreme AA seem to nuke the cards? My Kepler cards thermal throttle if Extreme AA is applied.

They're both at max usage but they are in BF3 as well and run a hell of a lot cooler!

Yeah, I just use everything maxed apart from high AA and no motion blur (I don't like motion blur myself) and I'm happy playing that at constant 60 FPS. GPU usage is only around 70-80%, but it runs just as hot as BF3 all ultra when it is at constant 100% usage. I would have though it would run cooler as there is lower usage, but it runs just as hot (if not slightly hotter).

Its SSAA, really works your gpu for ultimate image qualty.

Its worth it as it looks stunning but it costs you an arm and a leg and unless you have a overclocked 7970 or a multi gpu setup you can forget all about running it at smooth frame rates.

No, I mean when I only use high AA (when GPU usage is around 80%) it still runs as hot or hotter as BF3 all ultra (which is at 100% usage) which seems strange as I'd have thought it would be cooler since there is 20% less usage by the GPU.

Furry muff.

I guess its just one of those demanding games that fully utilizes all the features of dx11 like metro 2033. (which also heats gpu's nicely)

Yeah I suppose so, I have DIYed another 120mm fan to the back of the expansion slots of my case as you can see here:

Which does help temperatures and noise quite a bit. Damn sleeping dogs, forcing me to mod my case!

And before anyone asks, yes that metal looking cable is a Kryptonite security cable, I am pretty pedantic about security- I don't like people stealing my precious rig :)

Nice! I changed my H60 from intake to exhaust to lower my gpu temps while playing sleeping dogs. Now i go no higher than 80c which im happy with.

Yeah, with my custom fan profile I don't go above 65C now, on auto it gets to just under 70C (it used to push 75C). It does make a pretty good heater, I can feel all that hot air being pushed out the back by my new fan- will come in handy for winter :)

I remember when i had two 2900xt's (terrible cards) they saw me through a very cold winter.

I remember on christmas day, we all huddled around my computer for warmth.

Lol i remember that feeling with my 2x 5770's.
If it gets any colder this year il be forced to go cross again lol

Sleeping Dogs arrived this morning so did a couple of benches..

Time to play :)

Edit.. Just to mention that my temps just about hit 70c on Extreme preset.

37 FPS doesn't feel smooth to me or I would imagine a lot of people :D.

Each to their own though in this matter of course.

Well i think i need to back Matt up on this one.. just got the Dogs this morning and while playing on Extreme Preset and dipping down to.. yes.. 37fps on my overclocked 7950.. it actually does look and feel smoother than what 37fps would feel like in BF3.

Honestly mate i duno what it is.. maybe its something to do with the AMD cards that make it run smoother at lower fps but im not kidding when i say that when i go down to around the 37fps mark it still runs smooth.

Anyway i havnt really got too much into it yet and only played about half hour or so into it so maybe things will change once i start driving vehicles.. we'll see what happens :)

Undoubtedly it is smoother than 37 FPS in a first-person game. While I agree that 37 FPS feels far nicer on a third person game than a first person, for me it is not an ideal playing experience and not what I would define "smooth". That was more the point mate :).

As Kepler cards can't really handle extreme AA in this game due to a lack of compute power - and considering the large performance hit to minimal image quality trade off in general - I will play on High settings. My minimum was 30 FPS which isn't too far off what you're seeing at least...

As above though - each to their own on this. It just comes down to how you want to play.

They don't do anything extra.

Probably because BF3 is a FPS, and thus a higher framerate is more necessary as it is very much based upon fast reactions, whereas Sleeping Dogs doesn't really need responsiveness as much, which makes a lower frame rate more acceptable in terms of playability. It's really down to the individual whether they deem 37 FPS acceptable or not, for some like Matt it is perfectly smooth to them, whereas for others like Rusty 37 FPS is not acceptable. It isn't a case of '37 FPS is/isn't smooth end of', it it simply a case of if it is smooth for you, then all well and good. If it isn't, then use high AA instead of extreme. Also, there is nothing to suggest AMD cards are smoother at lower framerates than Nvidia cards, 37 FPS = 37 FPS. An argument could be made for slight differences in colour balances between cards, but as for smoothness there is no difference when both are at the same framerates.

I'll just play on Extreme unless i start to notice not so smooth gameplay.. i think its gona happen when driving fast as i've been watching some walkthroughs on youtube with an xbox player and its looks like it gets pretty hectic further into the missions. Right now i only see a slight difference in image quality between High and Extreme but then its been all night time for me so far :)

Btw i dont wana end up getting into any argument over this.. i just wana be honest about it and keep it real :p
