Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

So which version do you need to be able to install many times on ONE computer. Like the old retail version of windows 7? I am really confused by the different versions.

Is it worth it for my missus? She browses, uses Facebook, does work e-mails etc, no gaming at all just general usage. She still has XP.

Mainstream software quickly became graphical for a good reason - it was a better solution for a lot of mainstream uses. The same will happen with Metro style apps because they, too, are better solution for a lot of mainstream scenarios.

That's probably true for tablet users and for people who only work with one maximised application, but like I said I have a desktop PC with a large display and use multiple windows. Apps designed for small touchscreens, using large touch optimised controls, and forced to run fullscreen (or in a pretty useless sidebar), are a bloody awful solution for my personal scenario.

People argue that Modern UI and its apps will become more feature rich and scale better to the desktop as they're developed further, but personally I don't believe that a single interface can ever work equally well on both little touch screen devices and large mouse/keyboard controlled desktops. The compromises necessary to make Modern UI touch friendly may not bother a lot of people, but because of the way I use my PC they do bother me.

Microsoft won't get rid of WIMP interfaces just like they haven't ditched the command line. Having to go through a Metro style interface to get to the desktop is no different than having to launch the Start menu to get to the command line. It's trivial.

I never said that Microsoft will get rid of the WIMP interface completely. But if the applications I need are only available in Modern UI then that's what I'll have to use, just like command line fans ended up having to run graphical software. Obviously that's not something I'd be happy about.

Times change, people will get used to it.

The market can't handle costs of full retail. All they are doing is bringing them self more in line with modern methods and expect it to continue to change untill we eventually get windows for a nominal or even free charge and content / windowsstore becomes teh cash cow.

Just look at apple and android.

If times were changing it would be a download only and the option to make a bootable USB drive.

Very nice then. It has partially moved on. What size of stick do they recommend? hope it's not a silly amount.

Apps that translate well will gradually move over and apps that don't, won't.

Nobody is going to release touch versions of Visual Studio or Photoshop any time soon, believe me.

quite a slit decision here now i think the system builders edition will be good they should release hat for windows 7 or if they have i havent seen it i will wait a bit to see what it is actually like and iif there any flaws in it

Am I right in thinking the upgrade editions are downloads from the Microsoft website and not a DVD? It's just I have a really pitiful download speed 0.5mb so it would take roughly 24 hours to download and simply not practical.

You can get upgrade on DVD, it just costs twice as much, they're allready available on OcUK for pre order.

that is total madness that is like but then if it is going to cut costs then i can see why my only problem would be i have a tendency to lose stuff so i would lose the serial straight away just hope they give you a recovery link to retrieve you key

Pay the extra and buy a box then?

How difficult is it to burn the download to a DVD or USB stick and copy your key into a .txt document and put them somewhere safe?
