Was having a discussion with a group of friends earlier. We were discussing a certain scenario that my girlfriend came across when on a driving lesson and the instructor pointed out that 8/10 people get it wrong.

Anyway. I've done a diagram to show what I mean, hope it's clear enough

The argument against that is. "I'm not going through a red light though." The red light is only there because work is being carried out on the main road... where the red light is sitting. The road to the left, before the red light is fine and no work is being carried out.

The cars turning off the main road would need to give way to me surely as I'm on my side of the road and turning left, they would be cutting across me and coming onto my side of the road?

My theory anyway and I'm of course not 100%
 
The sign is positioned there so that people dont block that junction when queuing. Therefore I see no reason why you would not disregard it if you were using that turning.
 
Got asked by our driving trainer at work while out on a test this. "What is the only Hexagon shaped road sign and why is it that shape?"
 
You ignore the sign.

The sign is for continuing on, to stop you blocking the junction, since you are turning left you are not blocking the junction so keep going.

Exactly my point. The only reason the sign is before the junction on the left is to avoid idiots not having the common sense not to block it by stopping right in front of the red light.

However... girlfriends driving instructor (who isn't the greatest IMO, people are taking over 100 lessons at 90 mins each) thinks otherwise. He claims you should wait.
 
The traffic light is merely the signal telling you when to proceed past a certain point or not, in this case the red sign. In the same way you stop at a line in the road at a normal set of lights and it is the line you must not pass. So red light means don't proceed past the sign, even if you're turning left. I don't really see what is so confusing.

Please point to the exact part of the highway code which supports your position.

When a traffic light is red, you must not pass the stop line at the traffic light controlled junction.

It's suprising how many people don't seem to read the highway code, especially before they decide to imply that everyone else on a forum is a bit dim ;)

Correct, although its been 20 odd years since i looked at a highway code so that was my excuse!
