*** The Official Samsung Galaxy Note II Thread ***

I'd be prepared to have that battery life over a Note 2 with great battery life. That screen + cpu runs circles around the Note 2's.

I don't know... resolution isn't everything.

Sure, 1080p is better than 720p, but for me, OLED is the superior tech compared to IPS LCD, particularly at ~5" screen sizes. At such small pixel sizes I think it would come down to personal taste whether the improved pixel fidelity is more valuable than the contrast ratio, colour accuracy and stability of a SAMOLED panel at 720p (when using a true RBF sub-pixel arrangement of course).

I still like the idea of having the "butterfly J" in the marketplace though. A 1080p screen will spur other manufacturers into action which is good for everyone :)

You do know that the colour reproduction is simply fantastic on that 1080p 5" panel. Watch in full hd... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGjmZyKh8mE

That ips display is just gorgeous. The s4 pro is much more powerful than the cpu in the Note 2, and the andreo 320 is more than twice as fast as the mail 400 in the Note 2.

It'll make all the difference over a 2 year ownership, and the phone will not feel outdated since there can't be many more features added apart from a slightly faster cpu, which won't be much of a difference, and the screen is already top notch. Only the camera, but who buys a phone just for the camera, if you're really that serious, just get a decent point+shoot.

I think it'll be a great phone and will age really well. I seriously hope the 5 inch full hd phablet with the s4 pro is revealed on the 5th of November.

Wait wait wait...

Are you *seriously* suggesting that I judge the quality of a high-res mobile display by viewing it through *my own LCD monitor*, after it's been filmed using a digital camcorder?! :p Come on...

The fundamental technological differences between LCD IPS and OLED technologies are not really up for debate. OLED will always have better contrast ratios (essentially infinite due to "true" blacks), better colour stability, and better viewing angles. You contrast this against the uniformity of RGB stripes (i.e. equally-sized sub pixels) with LCD tech. It's not rocket science...

I'm aware of that, but already many reviews state that it's the best screen available on any phone. Amoled screens are over-saturated, but the blacks sure are great. The higher ppi means that the display will be much crisper, especially when reading text. I certainly don't think that amoled screens have better colour stability and since this screen has a much higher brightness level than the one of the Note 2 + outside visibility will be better.

For me though, it's the combination of the display and the processor that made me cancel my note 2 order.

Colour stability is the change in colour reproduction with shifting viewing angles. IPS displays show a sort of "purple hue" as you look from acute angles, whereas OLED is rock solid (again, due to the fundamental differences in the technology on which they are built; IPS shines a backlight through a matrix, whereas OLED pixels produce their own light).

I don't doubt that it's a good quality screen - after all the screen on the One X was fantastic, and that's 'just' 720p. But it's always a balance. There are certain things that IPS can never match OLED for. As for resolution - once you get above 300ppi I think there are seriously diminishing returns. Perhaps my eyes are just plain crap, but I can't make out individual pixels on even a 250 ppi screen, so I doubt that pushing above 400ppi will make much of a difference.

Fan boy much?

You do realise that people buy a phone for more than just the screen right? Its things like a wacom digitizer and the endless plethora of features that tide people like me over, yeah the butterfly j may have better hardware specs but with jelly bean now, what is gonna take advantage of that apart from maybe games, anyway the screen on the note 2 is fantastic and as already stated oled will always be better than lcd/ips

I'm most certainly not a fanboy. I've never owned a htc or a samsung. Finally changing phones after owning an iPhone 4 32GB for 2 years. Can't stand it and really want to change. Just saying.... and the screen is much better on the HTC, battery life is questionable though. If a nexus version was to come out that would mean great support + updates. I'll wait a month and decide to get a HTC if the HTC 5 Nexus is actually real+ released on the 5th of November, or to just get a Note 2 even though It'll feel outdated very soon due to the old A9 architecture, and the mail 400 gpu.

I guess battery life would be bad on that Japan version, but I'd be prepared to have that battery life over a Note 2 with great battery life. That screen + cpu runs circles around the Note 2's.

Strange priorities. The screen and CPU aren't going to run rings around it when its dead after a few hours because the battery is woefully insufficient.

Not sure about anyone else but I like my devices to be well rounded. No point having an OMG screen and POWAH!! If it doesnt last a day.

I understand what you mean about longevity, we all want our devices to go on as long as possible, for most people seeing out 18 and 24 month contracts, but given how much you can feasibly do on a phone, barring a huge change in mobile use in the next two years, does anyone honestly see the Note2 falling short?

30 days. Beginning of november. Some of the replies i have just received. Lte with tmobile is worrying me. I'll look elsewhere. Why do I have no patience?

The Galaxy Note 2 I don't see as a device you can compare to anything out there or even coming soon. If people are interested in waiting for the new nexus, surely they would be looking at comparing it to the S3 or OneX.

In regards to screen time, my OneX lasts for about 3 hours screen time and 20-24 hours from full to flat, if I'm lucky. Standard nowadays should at least provide 5 hours screen time on normal use IMO, no major reason not to, an extra mm or two to the thickness isn't going to put most people off.

Of course. A device is more than just the screen and cpu, and regarding that the note 2 is itself very good on both the referred fronts. This is oled with an excellent resolution with a quad core running jelly bean.. I'd much rather this thread is about the product itself, sourcing it, queries and help /ideas and not about a different product.
:-P

I swapped my white note 2 for a grey one. Much preferred it, also I had a blob I could see in low light. That isn't there on the grey one.

just to be clear, you have the Note 2 from T Mobile, not via a third party?

Cheers

Highly unlikely... The ONLY version that T-mobile are selling directly is the LTE version.

Regarding T-mobile, if the phones are not being shipped out by the 22nd (i.e. Monday), then I'm cancelling my order and going elsewhere. I don't really need LTE.

I got the old "stock is in and is shipping this afternoon" BS again yesterday evening. Yet, shock and horror, no shipping notification today.

Thinking of doing the same. Would have been nice to of had the LTE version so the option was there to migrate to 4G on day, but good customer service is higher on my list of essentials. Some of blatant lies from T-Mobile has opened my eyes a bit.
