Hey guys,

Very strange turn of events, I have just got myself a clevo P170EM (back at a certain PC Specialists as it had a dead pixel) I got myself this for work/gaming...

Now i've just been given a great spec brand new think-pad :confused:from the boss after jokingly asking for one afew weeks back. Hopefully i can leave the laptop as its back at the shop and get a refund for most of the amount (only had the laptop for 5 working days...) Otherwise i'm stuck with two great laptops

So, a gaming rig with good potential for overclocking and pretty sure i want a 7970..?

I have £1300 and need everything minus a mouse, keyboard and operating system.

Cheers for any help guys,

Cheers for those guys, I had feeling the i5 would be the one to go for as it's has great potential.

What performance difference is there between the i5 with 7970 and my i3610qm and 7970m?

I take it the i5 will still be suitable if I wanted to get another 7970?

Cheers,

I have read many times that people say "Don't get an I7 for gaming as it is a waste" I followed that advice and was in agreemance untill I went for SLI 680s. I could only get my GPUs running at 85%. That is enough but that is 15% of power on each I am losing out on and as I game at 5760*1080, I need all that extra GPU grunt. I changed to an I7 and BF3 is now running both GPUs at 99%

If you are thinking of going CrossFire, I would go with this chip.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £239.99
Total : £249.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Both Trusty and Remote Zero add a 7950 into your basket and I agree 100% with that choice. A great card that will clock well past a stock 7970. It is chip dependant of course but seeing card after card surpass a 7970 makes the 7950 a wise buy. It also helps with the free games and if you decide to buy a second 7950, you can give me FarCry 3 :)

Ok well both options seem good and I'm sure the budget can move to cover the i7 if needs be...

Just waiting on a call back as apparently this is my 8 working day, although they picked it up on my 6th and had it there yesterday... Hrm..

If you did that you would also need a different motherboard.

Agreed and to get the most out of Crossfire/SLI, X79 is the way to go.

Edit:

I should stay out of this thread as I did a basket and you don't want to see the cost :( I am not the guy for doing builds.

He's only gonna be gaming on a 1080p screen, there's no need.

Yeah, I'll make sure I have everything I place within reason as someday I'd like one of the Korean panels but for now 1080 will do me.

What does the i5 over clocks to? And what with these water cooled kits? Are they any good over a aftermarket cooler?

The I5 is a great clocker and most can get 4.4 without touching volts. When you go for higher though, the IVY chips do tend to get a little hot but with a good cooler, you will be fine. The after market coolers do a good job but I don't think they are warranted. The only decent way to water cool is to do a custom loop.

Yeah, think a decent aftermarket will do me fine as a full water cooled spec would blow the budget and do I'm not a fan of how they look in all honesty. 4.4 would do me lovely and my room tends to be on the cool side so shouldn't have problems with temperatures.

Will be able to check specs and reviews once I'm home but it seems an i5 and 7950 is a good base.
