I hate it when people image quote. But this pic deserves it! :D Brings back good memories. :D

Even after testing you might not like it :)

As you said, all bikes are overpriced, though I do wonder if all the manufacturers were to drop their prices significantly, whether that will actually stimulate more new bike purchases. I highly doubt that, especially for DH bikes given that it's a niche market. Perhaps it would for XC/AM use as the disciplines are more accesible to the public.

Companies like YT are making it very hard to sell bikes/frames that are aimed towards the mid-range market. Take the Specialized Status and the Morewood Izimu for example. Both are DH bikes deliberately aimed not at the very top end, but the mid-range spending market. That YT Tues that will be selling on the 12.12.12 makes it near impossible to recommend anything else.

Tell me about, unless there was a bike someone want for specific reasons to them the YT would be by recommendation everytime. Hell I'd even say get the YT for the spec alone and if you really don't want the frame sell it on and get frame of choice.

If I'm going to be quite honest, I'm a little gutted that I dropped so much money on my current DH bike. I could have bought 2 x limited edition YT Tues for what I paid for my build and I bought most of my components at discount! The frame itself is a FSR design but with a very low leverage ratio like the Makulu.

It's a shame that in August '11, when I ordered my frame, I didn't really know much about the direct to consumer German brands and I just stuck with what I knew. Don't get me wrong though, my current bike is fantastic, I just doubt it's worth double the price of the Tues.

Speaking of value for money, I neglected to mention that the full coil Makulu, with BOS Idylle, BOS Stoy, Formula Oval, SRAMx.0 type 2, SDG i-fly etc... will be selling for £3600 at retail.

Not half bad imo, especially given that it's not a one-off sale ;)

Thanks i will look.

I am back in Bristol weekend after next and there is a bike shop there i have used for the last 15 years i might pay those guys to do it rather than ballsing it up myself.

I shortened the hose on my M4s a while back, its really easy to do, takes about 10 minutes!

bah! broke my front shifter at swinley yesterday, no clicks on it now somehow
thinking of binning front mech and shifter and just going 1x9

im not so good at pushing big gears but would 32t front with a 9 speed 11-34 cassette be ok for most trail centre-y stuff?

need a chainguide as well, no isg mounts so has to be BB mounted
whats good? dont want a bash guard (hope chainring or renthal chainring?) , was hoping to find a bargain as well (around £50?)

do I need special chainring bolts to run my xt m770 cranks with a single ring?
or do the standard ones work?

can find an e13, superstar and dmr one cheapish, but people say the superstar one is noisy, although they dont look very tidy when you push them down to 32t (leaves loads of backing plate sticking out)

not asking for much just cheap, quiet, light, easy to setup, not to big and looks nice lol

I ride Swinley but have been so busy I have not been out on my bike for a while. I have gradually been building up parts ready for a 1x10 conversion on my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 07. I rode around Swinley most of last season with no issues keeping it on the middle ring. This was with a 10 speed 11-34 XT Cassette with 32 tooth middle ring. There are a couple of hills that I sometime found just one extra gear might have helped, so I am replacing my cassette with a 10 speed 11-36 XT.

Other parts I have got are SRAM x9 short cage rear derailleur, E-Thirteen guide, and an e-thirteen 32 tooth ring since they were on offer at CRC for £23.99 the other week. They are light as anything as is the XT cassette imo. The guide... you are right, with a 32 ring they do look a bit naff with the guide rail sticking out the back, but I have seen some people hack this off on certain guides. Not sure if this is possible with the e-thirteen one, I will have to check. Depends if you ever want to run or try a 34 tooth or something.

Personally I never found I EVER spin out the 11 x 32 combo (top gear) when off road at Swinley, unless I am hacking it along on a firetrack downhill, or on an actual road on the way to/from the trail. It depends what routes you do. We do routes with quite harsh uphills. 3 or 4 major ones. So 36 x 32 is occasionally required. Others would find a 36 x 34 fine with stronger legs I guess.

The last thing I need to get is my SRAM x9 shifter which I will get from Germany as they are much cheaper out there.

I certainly would recommend ditching the front mech and shifter. As for bolts. Yes you will need to get the short ones for a single ring setup. I got the E-thirteen ones on CRC for the rip off price of £13 odd. I couldn't be bothered trying to get them cheaper elsewhere as it's not clear to me what comes with what and if they would work. These I know will.

How did you break your front shifter? What type was it?

I did have XT shifters (2x9) with a xt front mech and a stinger chain thingy

It was muuuuuday at swinley the other day so the whole thing was gritty and clogged , kept getting chainsuck at the front when I put the power down
eventually the front shifter stopped working, when I push the trigger down the mech moves correctly still - but has no indexing to keep it there (no "clicks")

had enough so superstar plasma is already here and waiting on hope 32t chainring and short bolts today, think I will be ok 90% of the time, only time I think I will struggle is steep up bits (like the wall at swinley) as Im a spinner that gives up too easily and drops to granny - maybe it will make me man up a bit rather than struggle - I hope :(

id go for a 10 speed 11-36 but Ive only just bought the cassette and chain recently, although would be a good excuse for a shadow plus rear mech !

That is a good price. I mate of mine is starting to look for a new DH bike. Will bring this to his attention

Dilemma, rear wheel is trashed and I have an uplift on Saturday. Bike shop managed to true it but spokes won't hold tension on one side, they reckon I need a new rim.

At this late stage it's not going to be possible to get a new rim built on to my hub in time for Saturday. Do I rush around attempting to find a new off the shelf rear wheel or do I hope to god that my rear wheel will hold up to a day's worth of abuse? :(

If it's any consolation, blowing your rear wheel isn;t the worst thing that can happen while riding.

I'd chance it.
(btw: I'm not known for making the best decisions :) )

I suppose I should take it a little easier too, wouldn't like to come off an already broken finger.

It's decided, I'm chancing it. Nothing to do with the fact that I'm skint, honest!

What is the obsession with the shadow rear mechs? What is so good about them? I went SRAM X9 because I wanted to run a short cage rear mech and Shimano only do the saint in a short cage version. Their "normal" rear mechs are GS or SGS which are basically medium or long cage right?

yeah shadown means tucked away more

the plus bit is the little clutch lever thing that stops chainslap / rattle
