Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

There isn't a retail version of 8 and the new oem does allow you to install on different hardware, so long as it's only installed on one device at a time, so I'd imagine the upgrade would too.

Thanks, thenewoc
I wasnt aware that Win8 could be installed on different hardware.

not sure if you would need to downgrade the w8 licence first though so you could reinstall old windows first, activate it, then re upgrade.

Could people who have successfully downloaded and installed, post hash codes for their ISO.

The ISO is generated after download, but my hashes are:

MD5 80cbe1cc694fbd968326a73cc19291fc
SHA256 dd6f789d14a5e1b1bcce95fcdb9e11a125fea89008f544802d453d62e0eb3f72

File size of 64-bit is:
2.63GB (2,831,089,664 bytes)

If you have a look into the ISO and open up autorun.inf in notepad you'll see:
Code:
[AutoRun.Amd64]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

[AutoRun]
open=sources\SetupError.exe x64
icon=sources\SetupError.exe,0

I doubt it would mention x64 at all if you have a 32-bit download?

Loving Windows 8 so far. Feels quicker, love Hyper-V. Still undecided on Start. Might just get Shell8 or something if I can find a good use for the tiles.

Stupid Origin wants me to activate my installed and registered games with the cd keys after upgrading. I have no idea where the keys are anymore. Stupid that you have to re-activate games tied to your account..

I hate EA...

many thanks , still undecided weather to get it:confused:

If you're on w7 then there's no great rush since it won't be amazingly different and everyone has until 31st Jan 2013 to get it at the offer price. The sensible would wait a bit for any issues to get ironed out, get associated hardware utility software for w8, drivers etc. I'm only doing it now as my new PC needs 64bit OS and I only have XP 32bit, although using W8 release preview at the moment to limp through until this upgrade was made available. I would imagine vista users will be rejoicing to finally make the shift too.

I didnt get this problem but the keys are stored on your Origin account. Right click on the game to view key or something like that.

If I upgraded from W7 to W8 pro upgrade , if and when W9 is released can I upgrade further or would I need a full version of W9?

I know this is a way off but it would be nice to know.

thanks

How come some of you guys are able to activate your Windows 8 Pro when doing a fresh install on a blank drive?

I tried it first time around and when I tried to activate it didn't have a product key inserted even though I typed it at the beginning of the install and when I typed it in during activation it said the product key was good to go but then a message box came up saying it can't activate because I needed to upgrade from inside Windows 7.

I bought the £14.99 upgrade. Maybe the £24.99 upgrade doesn't have this restriction?

Mine was the £14.99 upgrade. Created a USB boot drive and installed on a fresh formatted SSD with no other drives installed and all was ok. Windows activated itself as part of the setup.

That's good to know!

I'm now thinking my first install was corrupted.

The product key had disappeared when I tried to activate, I couldn't change the desktop theme (but no message to tell me I needed to activate to do so which I believe it should have done) and Windows Updates failed and reverted during the reboot.

sorry if this has been answered 10,000 times but after the initial upgrade install can that key then be used for a fresh install if say you change your mobo. you wouldnt have to reinstall win7 then upgrade to 8?

its the potential of having to do 2 installs in the future that mean i dont want to go for this upgrade option.

At the end of the day is it too much trouble to do? Just slap Windows 7 or whatever on - takes about half an hour. No need to faff about with drivers or anything and then just boot Windows 8 from your DVD/USB drive and wipe the drive from within setup.

dont you think its a ridiculous way of doing things? 2 format and installs for one OS? win 7 made a big deal of making installing easy - as it should be.

it just seems like they have forgotten everything that made win 7 good and created a twisted love child of it for win 8. all you can see is confusion in the install threads.

I registered for the Windows 8 Upgrade Offer for £14.99, can I use the upgrade on my main PC instead of the laptop I bought? Or will the upgrade only work on the laptop I have registered for the code?

Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

From the Upgrade Offer website FAQ :)
