Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

My only complaint so far, which i have rectified was that, as it's tablet aimed, the default power saving features are rather aggressive. By default it shuts down the HDDs after just 20 minutes.

I left it running today ripping a particularly tricky CD with Exact Audio Copy. When i came home from work i found it had switched itself off. Upon hitting the power button it came back to life and did what looked like a full boot, and after logging back in it continued where it had left off (around 65%).

So basically despite HDD and Optical Drive (and CPU) activity, becuase there had been no 'input' for a few hours, it went to sleep, stopping the process i had intentionally left on.

Will run a test tonight to see if it remains on overnight.

This has always been the same, Set your power options up in control panel. HDD's shutting down after 20mins has been there since Vista if I recall correctly it was definitely in Windows 7!

After a few days I'm getting on just about ok with it, if I could be bothered I think I would go back to windows 7, but I don't dislike 8 enough to go through the bother of reverting back.

Things I like:

Boot times, I'm booting to desktop in 12 seconds :) windows 7 took 17.

Jetpack Joyride and Pinball FX 2 rock.

Issues I've got so far:

Not being able to change app installation drive.

Skype seems a bit dodgy on Windows 8, could be unrelated but had a lot of call disconnects and app hanging on the desktop version of skype, I uninstalled the metro version coz it was pap.

I've tried to give the new interface a go and resist using any addons, but the reality is I get lost far to easily without a start bar, I'm much happier with classicshell installed and booting straight to desktop whilst viewing metro as a virtual 'ipad' on my PC ;)

Most of the metro style apps suck, whether its the weird metro version of IE 10 through to the rubbish mail program, I was really expecting a bit better from the new version of the apps, oh and all the current twitter apps suck imho.

I guess overall it just seems to be a bit telling that my time with windows 8 so far has been a frustrating few days trying to force myself into using it 'out of the box' before giving in and trying to change it to be as much like windows 7 as possible. I guess I must be one of those dinosaurs that doesn't like change :(

I've now installed it on my media centre, where the metro desktop makes a bit more sense. Really irritating not being able to change the size of the files without a registry hack though.

Really enjoying it although I guess I like the change as I've been using a Windows Phone + Android for a while now. Only thing that was annoying me was the lack of start button in desktop mode but I've got that resolved with quick access to my 2nd hdd on the desktop now. And I'll probably end up rectifying that today with a download or two same with the layout for the metro interface so I can get some custom jpegs as the images.

My opinion of Windows 8 has just gone up again, I found the open command prompt as administrator button in File Explorer. The new search in explorer is better too, it's good to see MS putting time into a core part of Windows.

Say what now? Is this true?

For metro apps it's true. Due to being sandboxes secure etc. I don't see it as an issue. Most of them are tiny anyway.

Desktop software is handled the same as in win7

Oh thank god. I was worried it would try to install my steam folder onto my ssd lol.

I'm about to install over 7, rather than clean install. So I'll let you know once I've finished fixing everything it breaks :p

Metro is also promoted as an "Ad serving platform" and Its already showing with how Adware looking its become since launch. Adverts on Live tiles and on almost every page of downloaded apps spamming away and burning thru more bandwidth.

Could you tell us which apps are putting adverts on their live tile?

youll be fine did that yesterday :p

I'm about to install tonight, before I downloaded it the Download client checked my PC and a couple of things came up. The main one said something about my cpu didn't support nx? But I've got an i5 2500k, so I assume I can just turn this on in the bios? Or isn't it needed?

http://geekchunk.com/how-to/check-your-cpu-is-compatible-with-windows-8-or-not/

Many people have encountered the “Your CPU is not compatible with Windows 8″ error during installation even after checking the requirements to ensure compatibility of their CPU.

This error is encountered when users try to upgrade to the release preview on a CPU that does not support PAE, NX and SSE2 features. If you are one of them who are getting this error, then you should check the BIOS and NX entries and make sure that they are enabled. If your CPU does not have these features, then you cannot upgrade.

Did the upgrade install, and the only bits that needed doing were reinstalling the cat 12.11 drivers, updating avast, and installing the windows updates. All done. I'm actually really enjoying it. I feel as though I'm not even scratching the surface of what I can do with it though.

The underlying OS is nice, but Metro/Modern applications are (currently) trash. Even if they were good I doubt I'd spend much time using them due to them running full-screen.

You can't drag individual tabs just IE as a whole. That and you have a choice between 75% of the screen or 25%.

Not true, im sitting on Win 8 Pro and have the same features and more as I did in Win 7 such as side by side and fane splitting into 2 separate windows.

Installed it last night.

The upgrade was painless. The only apps that it didn't like (and make me uninstall before the upgrade) was Daemon tools and my intel wifi software (it installed it's own wifi drivers anyway). The upgrade took about 30 mins and required no interaction (other than setting up my account).

I actually like the new start menu, but I'm probably not going to use it that often. I only used it for an hour or so but I don't think it will take too long to figure out.

As long as it runs pro tools and all my plug ins correctly I will definitely be keeping it.

One quick question. The mail app linked to my hotmail account only shows mail from the last 2 weeks. Is there a way of changing this?

Yeah I installed last night too, I can't really see the reason to why people don't like it. The only thing they have really changed is the start menu is now one big screen. True a couple of bits and bobs are different but it's not much. I found the installation quick and the 8 itself pretty easy to use. I like it!

Interesting question. I haven't used the mail app as I use Thunderbird which worked fine after the upgrade. I can't see a way of seeing older mail. Maybe the developers though we deal with mail as it arrives, moving it into other folders if we want to keep it.
