My only complaint so far, which i have rectified was that, as it's tablet aimed, the default power saving features are rather aggressive. By default it shuts down the HDDs after just 20 minutes.
I left it running today ripping a particularly tricky CD with Exact Audio Copy. When i came home from work i found it had switched itself off. Upon hitting the power button it came back to life and did what looked like a full boot, and after logging back in it continued where it had left off (around 65%).
So basically despite HDD and Optical Drive (and CPU) activity, becuase there had been no 'input' for a few hours, it went to sleep, stopping the process i had intentionally left on.
Will run a test tonight to see if it remains on overnight.
After a few days I'm getting on just about ok with it, if I could be bothered I think I would go back to windows 7, but I don't dislike 8 enough to go through the bother of reverting back.
Things I like:
Boot times, I'm booting to desktop in 12 secondswindows 7 took 17.
Jetpack Joyride and Pinball FX 2 rock.
Issues I've got so far:
Not being able to change app installation drive.
Skype seems a bit dodgy on Windows 8, could be unrelated but had a lot of call disconnects and app hanging on the desktop version of skype, I uninstalled the metro version coz it was pap.
I've tried to give the new interface a go and resist using any addons, but the reality is I get lost far to easily without a start bar, I'm much happier with classicshell installed and booting straight to desktop whilst viewing metro as a virtual 'ipad' on my PC
Most of the metro style apps suck, whether its the weird metro version of IE 10 through to the rubbish mail program, I was really expecting a bit better from the new version of the apps, oh and all the current twitter apps suck imho.
I guess overall it just seems to be a bit telling that my time with windows 8 so far has been a frustrating few days trying to force myself into using it 'out of the box' before giving in and trying to change it to be as much like windows 7 as possible. I guess I must be one of those dinosaurs that doesn't like change![]()
Say what now? Is this true?
For metro apps it's true. Due to being sandboxes secure etc. I don't see it as an issue. Most of them are tiny anyway.
Desktop software is handled the same as in win7
Metro is also promoted as an "Ad serving platform" and Its already showing with how Adware looking its become since launch. Adverts on Live tiles and on almost every page of downloaded apps spamming away and burning thru more bandwidth.
Oh thank god. I was worried it would try to install my steam folder onto my ssd lol.
I'm about to install over 7, rather than clean install. So I'll let you know once I've finished fixing everything it breaks![]()
I'm about to install tonight, before I downloaded it the Download client checked my PC and a couple of things came up. The main one said something about my cpu didn't support nx? But I've got an i5 2500k, so I assume I can just turn this on in the bios? Or isn't it needed?
Many people have encountered the “Your CPU is not compatible with Windows 8″ error during installation even after checking the requirements to ensure compatibility of their CPU.
This error is encountered when users try to upgrade to the release preview on a CPU that does not support PAE, NX and SSE2 features. If you are one of them who are getting this error, then you should check the BIOS and NX entries and make sure that they are enabled. If your CPU does not have these features, then you cannot upgrade.
You can't drag individual tabs just IE as a whole. That and you have a choice between 75% of the screen or 25%.
Installed it last night.
The upgrade was painless. The only apps that it didn't like (and make me uninstall before the upgrade) was Daemon tools and my intel wifi software (it installed it's own wifi drivers anyway). The upgrade took about 30 mins and required no interaction (other than setting up my account).
I actually like the new start menu, but I'm probably not going to use it that often. I only used it for an hour or so but I don't think it will take too long to figure out.
As long as it runs pro tools and all my plug ins correctly I will definitely be keeping it.
One quick question. The mail app linked to my hotmail account only shows mail from the last 2 weeks. Is there a way of changing this?
