Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2012, Yas Marina - Race 18/20

Problem with the fuel system on the car - stewards accepted this as a reason why he couldn't get back to the pit lane.

But during scruitineering, 850ml of fuel was found instead of the minimum 1 litre that was required. So was penalised accordingly.

So the automatic penalty has taken over 4.5 hours to decide upon... W... T... F?!

Wow.
What a result.
Gentleman, I think the championship is back on.
I am hoping that Alonso can really get some good points tomorrow and close down the gap.

Hamilton was penalised earlier in the season for the same problem? Consistency for once from the FIA.

Alonso's chance to capitalize on Vettel's misfortune, game on!

Mark might be getting orders to ram Alonso!

Hehehe.

If he does ram Alonso (and it is deemed to be on purpose (like what MSc used to do)), he may receive a lengthy ban.

In all seriousness, Webber doesnt appear to like Vettel or in particular RBR's unequivocal support for Vettel. I doubt he would get himself involved with Alonso.

Alonso must try and get a podium tomorrow. Given McLaren's pace and the cars in front of him, this may not be easy. Vettel's development has made tomorrow's race interesting.

COME ON!

This should be interesting.

No idea who Maldonado will hit now though...

Let's hope Lewis can get to the end of the race without a breakdown...

Let's hope Alonso can be competitive, and doesn't get held up by Webber too much...

if Freddie wins, that could be the most expensive 150ml of fuel ever, even putting UK pump prices to shame.

Something strange is happening to me, i'm rooting for Alonso!

What's going on?!

Honestly though I feel Alonso deserves to win the championship this year far more than Vettel

As great as it is, I cant see Alonso scoring 15 points tomorrow and then getting more points than vettel in the last 2 races. Hope it does happen though!

Suddenly, this race is worth watching (not that I was going to miss it anyway!).

Alonso starts P6 now, he has to eat into Vettel's lead tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see what Vettel manages starting last on the grid on a circuit where passing is virtually impossible.

I have the exact same issue :S

Alonso has had a much much more challenging road to where he is though, hence why he deserves it so much more.

Hopefully he can get top 3 and take the championship back. To be fair, the chances of Lewis having a failure and Alonso getting top 2 wouldn't be bad either. Also have a feeling that Alonso may do better in USA so long as the car does ok. Just feel he'll be better on a new circuit.

Full FIA Statement

FIA said:
The Stewards received a report from the Race Director that car 1 failed to return to the pits under it's own power as required under Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations.

The Stewards heard from the driver and team representatives and studies telemetry evidence that showed the reason why the car was stopped.

The Stewards accepted the explanation and considered the incident as being a case of force majeure.

However a report was received fromt he Technical Delegate that showed during post-qualifying scrutineering an insufficient quantity of fuel for sampling purposes.

The Stewards determine that this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the Qualifying Session.

The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid.

Vettel is going to have a hard day tomorrow. Was one of the slowest cars through the speed traps, so will have to be brave through the twisties instead.
