piledriver - Official AMD FX4300,FX6300 and FX8350 review thread

It is a feature not available in the BIOS on most MB's.
It isn't in the BIOS on any of the ASUS boards.
All you can do is disable whole modules.

I'm sure there was a load of boards you could do it on?
A CH IV could lock individual cores on a Bulldozer.

The option isn't there on ASUS anymore.
AMD said not to do it and they fell in line.

Gigabyte have it so someone can give it a go.
Biostar ans ASrock might have it.

Good news on my 990XA-UD3 purchase, the box is clearly marked as having a AM3+ compatible bios installed on it.

Don't mean to burst your bubble, however that doesn't specifically mean Piledriver compatibility straight off without a BIOS flash.

Zambezi and Piledriver are both AM3+ CPU's.

Could just mean out of box Zambezi support.

But then since there's not much difference, it could work until a proper BIOS is on, or it's already got a Piledriver BIOS.

What was AMD's reason for blocking it?

No idea
It was something i read whilst looking for info about the ASUS bios settings for core enable/disable.

I made a post in the ROG forum, maybe someone will have info.

Damn, I clearly made a mistake in ordering my motherboard from another company. Happy to take the cash from my bank but didn't have the motherboard in stock and lied about shipping it. Lesson learned...only deal with reputable companies (especially the ones that give you Haribo!). So I've got to wait to get my money back from the shysters first, build on hold until then and Birmingham Trading Standards have been informed. I would name and shame but can't mention competitors. Does make me appreciate OcUK's customer service more though.

The 3570k has been cheaper at OCUK before.
The 8350 and 3570k are fine to compare against each other as they're pretty much the same price region in my honest opinion.

The 8320 does have the price advantage though.

And I'm sure someone agreed to this 1 core per module thing :p
That was me. Unfortunately due to a fraudulent etailer my build is not complete.

My money is on it booting fine.

I've not done any clocking or proper benchmarks, but my encode time on Ripbot using the 8350 has jumped a mile compared to my e8600.

Jumped or dropped?

Encode times have dropped. It's not an exact measure as I hadn't tried encoding the same video under the e8600 before hand, but an hour and a half long 1:85:1 feature blu-ray of a 1988 film with a mixture of dark and bright scenes without much in the way of busy camera action took just under 4 hours to encode to a 1080p x264. Apologies for the long description but I don't feel right naming the movie here!

I don't have the exact settings to hand, but it was done using crf 18.

This is just my gut feeling, but I wouldn't have been suprised if it had taken anywhere between 15 and 24 hours on my e8600.

If I really wanted to I could set up the e8600 for a test, but I'm so happy with the difference that I won't bother.
