piledriver - Official AMD FX4300,FX6300 and FX8350 review thread

Several of you are on water, I will be using air for my 8350, currently a Thermalright ultra 120 with push pull PWM vipers. Up to 1600rpm on full prime runs

What air coolers are people using?

What would be recommended as an upgrade if anything?

I am getting 30C idle and 58C full prime at 4.1GHz on my 1090T in a warm room. The vipers are reasonably quiet.

I did some tweaking of voltages last night and managed to get my core temps down 4-5C. Still struggling a little with socket and VCORE-1 temps on the board though so need to work on that too.

Hope the asrock extreme 3 970 boots no problem otherwise im screwed

It's listed as being an AM3+ board so I reckon it'll be alright........and I'm on a roll at the mo!!! :D..................all be it a very short one :p

Edit; does anyone know what the max multiplier is on these?

I'll be using the Silver Arrow SB-E. Thinking about putting a third fan on it once my motherboard arrives.

I've gone back to air for now and the "CPU temp" hasn't budged at all, whereas the individual core temps have gone up about 15C when under load. For this reason I shall be ignoring the CPU temp, any sensor that shows no difference between air and water is a load of rubbish.

Finally my motherboard is shipping so I'll be building sometime tomorrow.

Wolvers, could you tell me what cooler you're using, since we're both on the same 8320 batch and both using ASUS boards it'll be good to see if I can get similar performance. Is the 4.8 Gig clock running stable for you?

4.8ghz not 24/7 stable for me yet. I'm having trouble with my VRM temps (75C in stress testing) because of the air flow in that area of my HTPC case (see link in sig). Gonna pop a little fan in there tomorrow to see if I can sort that out. Look out for VCORE-1 temp in the Asus thermal software, it's close to the CPU temp (socket temp) and seems to spread heat into that part of the board.

4.6ghz is stable now. Max core temps are down to 51C during stress testing so I've got plenty of headroom there to try and get 4.8ghz stable, once I've got those VRM temps under control. My chip seems to prefer higher fsb, lower multi where it needs less vcore and hence runs cooler. At the moment I'm running 263x17.5, which I think is the stock multi.

I'm using a custom loop with Fuzion V2 CPU block btw, have a look at my build thread in my sig and you'll see. I need to update it actually with this latest set up. :)

Built the rig i was waiting for (for a friend) running stock atm with the saphire oc 7770.

Ran heaven with everything full @1050 got avg 27fps and a score of 780 (ish)
Not bad going for straight out the box with max aa ect.

The stock cooler is a loud annoying thing, upgrade the second you have a chance!.

Edit* same batch as above 8320

Fair play Wolvers, you've really crammed some gear in there! I doubt my CPU cooling will compete (Thermalright Silver arrow) but hopefully I won't have the same airflow issues.

The motherboard is enroute according to the parcel tracking so the build will be commencing any time now.

To recap, I'm going from:-

E2200 Core2Duo
Asus P5QL-SE Motherboard
4Gb OCZ 1066Mhz DDR2
2x36Gb Raptors in Raid 0
Akasa AK-965 Cooler
Ati 4670 Gfx

to :-

PileDriver 8320
Asus Crosshair V Formula Z
128Gb Crucial M4
8Gb Ripjaws X (soon to be upgraded to some 2133 Mhz or possibly the Samsung greens)
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E cooler
AMD 7850 2Gb

I think I may notice a slight performance boost! Next year's project will be to convert it watercooling

I've still not installed the 8350, will be tomorrow now due to other pressures. I will be using 250 x 17.5 as a start point for overclocking having proved the motherboard and memory at these clocks and above. Memory will start at 2000MHz at 250 clock and work up to 2133 with a higher clock.

First thing tomorrow though is the grand opening :) hotdogs.

8350 just installed, everything at auto in bios except clock, 250 from 200 - 4.0GHz (16 x 250)
vcore 1.236V, CPU-Z 1.62
CPU temp 52C prime 8 threads
core temp 39C prime 8 threads
TRUE air cooler, vipers at 1250rpm PWM fairly quiet.
memory at 2000 MHz

Certainly runs cooler than my 1090T at same clock

Will check out later max OC at stock settings, off out for a bit.

UPDATE 4.4 stable mostly still on auto settings, need to review, getting warm.
vcore 1.340V, CPU-Z 1.62
261 x 17 =4.437
CPU temp 62C prime 8 threads
core temp 50C prime 8 threads
TRUE air cooler, vipers at 1830rpm PWM fairly loud.
memory at 2080 MHz
HT NB at 2610 MHz
Cinebench 7.5 points, wprime32m = 8.27 secs.

Strapped a 60mm fan to the VRM heatsink and it's taken ~10c off of VCORE-1 temps and a few off of the CPU temp. I think I'm going to look for a slim 80mm fan because the 60mm is 25mm thick and only just fits under the rad.

After ~25 minutes of Prime and watching footy on SkyGo. :D
