Not sure if this is a silly question (of if it's been asked before) but if i download the £24.99 upgrade (windows 7 ultimate installed) from microsoft will i be able to download an iso? and if so can i a DVD from the iso to do a clean install or do i just create a disk that must be used once windows 7 has been installed?

Yeah you will* get the option to create an .ISO file once the files have been downloaded, and you can use it for a fresh install.
Once you have the key(which you get immediately after purchase and before the download begins), you can use it for fresh installs or upgrade from any compatible windows install through the upgrade tool. AFAIK It only checks your current license at the initial purchase stage.
NB: in the email they send with your Product Key, there' a link to re-download the files(through the upgrade assistant).

*Some people don't get the option to create a .ISO, i think this is only if upgrading from WinXP but i'm not sure.
If you don't get the option to create an ISO, you can create a bootable disc from the downloaded files instead:

thanks very much

I got the option to create the .iso and took it. I was running Windows 7. I thought, from reading the help about this, that this was the standard thing it offered.

Handy to know where in the installation folder is, though, in case needed.

Whats the cheapest route to get windows 8 and where from.

I have old copies of xp so would I qualify for the upgrade option? Do I need to have xp installed for will I just be able to stick disk in for it to check?

Right have downloaded it, seems to have created a shortcut on the desktop, what do I need to do now?

Probably being a little thick here but only had a quick.look as needed to get to work early.

Have picked up a SSD off mm to install it to on my htpc.

Regards

What did you do after the download completed (when it asks if you want to install now, create a USB/DVD installer and such)?

If you told it to do nothing (although it will create this shortcut regardless of if you create bootable media or not), it will create a install windows shortcut on the desktop.

If you're planning on installing it on another computer and didn't create media to boot from, then there should be a hidden folder in the root directory of the system drive which contains all the files which you should be able to use to create a bootable DVD or USB drive.

I left it running on pc and it created a shortcut on the desktop. Am intending burning to a disk or USB, will a 4gb drive do?

Just wasn't sure what to do now I have icon on desktop.

Matt

Click the icon and follow the instructions, it'll ask you whatnot epwant to do, ie keep files settings, then it'll download the actuall file, then it'll ask if you want to install or creat a USB/DVD.
