X-Factor 2012

Was a bit of a shock, but it's of no consequence as there'll be half a dozen of them churning out albums. Be amazed if any get to a second album deal. 1 Direction have only been successful because of that young lad knocking off older birds and being in the papers all the time, and loads spent on marketing. The winners of last year (little mix wasn't it?) will be dropped by record label before long. Nice girls, but the market is saturated with bland pop. You need to be different/special/talented to stand out in a sea of sewage that is the charts these days, or you'll not last for more than a year.

Saw one of the X Factor finalists in Spain last year doing the rounds on an evening cabaret thing to half a room full of punters ****ed up on all inclusive tasteless beer/urine. Hardly living the dream :(

So I was catching up with some of James Arthurs songs from the past few weeks seeing as he seems most likely to win it. In week three he did LMFAO and it was all 'so original' but I swear I had heard it before somewhere. I trawled through my internet history and lo and behold:

In other news Joseph Whelan apparently has a record label. He could actually sing.

The album is only available on his own website, he was a start-up band with almost zero marketing or finances behind him, which are both key to promoting albums and selling records. Do I really need to explain basic common sense things like this to people on this forum?

Indeed. In music, marketing, advertising and PR is probably more important than the quality of the music itself.

Even if James leaves the show today, he will have had enough PR to get him going. Of course, it will take a "proper" record company behind him to push his music onto the public.

there's stacks of people out there who can sing and song write.

True.
But those other people, haven't been on XFactor and been marketed on the 2nd highest rated TV show in the UK.

In music, marketing and advertising is integral to selling big numbers of CDs. Probably more so than the quality of the music itself.

With regards to writing your own songs - this matters not one bit. Some of the biggest selling artists in the World do not write their own songs. they have professional song writers write the music. They work with a top producer and the singer sings the song.

At present One Direction are the biggest selling boy band in the World.
Do they write their own songs - NO.
Do they produce their own material - NO.
Do they play any instruments - NO.
Do they have best in class marketing behind them - YES.

i understand writing your own songs matters not a freat deal. richdog was using it in his ever increasing fanboyism for james arthur.

you can't really compare him to a boyband though as the marketing angle taken on a boyband would have no impact on sales to an artist such as james arthur and this is kind of my point. you could ***** millions in marketing james arthur and he would never be that succesful (in a record sales, seats sold angle, not on what his fans would class as succesful) as there is simply not enough market requirement for his act.

i can't stand one direction, jls etc. that doesn't mean i don't understand they are succesful and are perfect for the current market.

Don't tar JLS, at least they weren't manufactured. :p

JLS and Leona (possibly some Murs) are the only acts I've actually liked that came from X-Factor.

JLS were manufactured just by one of their members rather than a manager they are hardly the bunch of school mates they try and portray!

Most bands and groups start up that way, different from being a bunch of solo acts put together by a tv show like 1D/Little Mix.

What's James going to slaughter this week for Abba week?

Money money for me so he can put his angry young man fake angst spin on it.

Or the name of the game.

Yes I can see him destroying that.
