My MSI RMA Experience...

Ok so I'm being told the entire box + contents was sent to MSI as it was shipped to OcUK by me, so its MSI's logic just to bin the box + multiple accessories and send the card back as above.

Had a reply, was told it says to return the card only (it almost does, see above, very loosely worded).

TL;DR: Unlucky, should have spent longer combing over the poorly laid out RMA instructions. Just asked if thats the case what happend to my box etc...I wouldn't think they'd just skip it...
It doesn't matter what it says..

As no one is allowed to just throw away or keep the extra stuff you payed for just because you sent that extra stuff back in error

I still don't think you would have to accept it though, if one of the pci-e pins was damaged(for talking sake) in transit because you never put the protector/shields on, where would that have left you?

It's a two way street here, I always keep the box it came in as that box was designed to protect the contents from damage in the first place.

I remember the thread of the Evga gpu sent in transit that got damaged and iirc, the threads op was told that was the best way to send a faulty item back.

At the very least as stated earlier, a simple courtesy email from the rma dept telling you that you sent too much and gave you the choice of getting it back-again especially as you paid in the region of £400-£480 for your Lightning.

Personally not impressed tbph, I always rate OcUK CS highly-second to none even, but their good name has taken a knock in my eyes leaving me with a rethink on future purchases if it ends up as tough luck on your part.:(

Now being told I need to contact MSI as they will have all my parts etc...asked for a direct contact email, MSI support (with routes via their HQ in asia) has been less then helpful in the past so I'd rather deal directly with their base in the Netherlands.

But that was my thinking tommy, the retail packaging is the best form of return, I saw that EVGA thread and how they tried to wriggle their way out of issuing a replacement which was another reason why I used the orignal packaging complete with accessories.

As for MSI not being able to muster up an ESD bag big enough to fit the lightning in...I don't know, at all. The state it was sent in with the PCI bracket poking out through a hold in the bag, I'd guarantee I could statically damage the card. To the point where if I returned the card like that, I'd expect it to be rejected.

It looks like OcUK are simply passing the buck now by informing you of chasing up the goods you paid for in good faith, by taking your money they entered into a legal binding contract to deal with the warranty for at least the first year, you didn't purchase it direct from MSI.

MSI email/phone support is abysmal I'm afraid, you will spend ages on the runaround getting passed from pillar to post, leaving you bashing your head off a wall never to buy MSI again. :(

If you were meant to return the bare card(the wording is questionable at least through interpretation), the question begs to be asked-why did OcUK not send the bare card off to MSI themselves after they inspected the gpu for physical damage?

Again, I'm not impressed and it gets worse the more info you put up.

Hopefully 5UB gets on the case and resolves this amicably in turn restoring my now fading faith in OcUK's CS.

They have absolutely no way of telling whether a card has been statically damaged IMO pgi947,

Yep I know, doesn't take away the point that the card could have been easily damaged with how it was packaged...If MSI want proof of this, I'll easily take an old GPU to work, put it in the same ESD bag and subject it to a sharp static shock and see if it works :p

I hope 5UB gets involved too, but I can't take away any credit from Bailey, he is trying to help as much as he can, he has even provided me with some direct reference/RMA numbers and contact information to see if MSI can somehow redeem them selves.

Yes Bailey's a good guy too, but, again, you dealt with OcUK not MSI.

Would you be inclined to pay extra for OcUK's CS with future purchases or would you just go to the cheapest place you can find said parts after what's happened?

Tbh I'd probably just buy cheapest then RMA direct to manufacturer regardless of how old the item is, I'd presume the manufacturer would give a little better RMA info then what I received. Or at least a little clearer.

Edit: I must stress I'm not looking for any form of forum retribution etc... as we saw in the XFX thread a few weeks ago, I quite simply want back what I paid for.

I can't agree more with this and would be exactly the same. If I was a repair guy and someone sent me a computer to repair, I wouldn't fix it and take out the extra HDD and DVD drive, I would return it as I recieved it.

Exactly.

If one of my clients sent me something and I retured it with less I would certainly loose a client, if not my job.

I'll give MSI until Tuesday to respond, if not I'll seek advice from trading standards, probably a little excessive but I can't see any other option.

OP your experience sounds very similar to the one I had when my GTX 560 ti was RMA'd because it kept making a loud buzzing noise. I sent it in its original box with the accessories then without warning, I received the card in that tiny box with none of my accessories returned. I was quite fortunate that the card they sent me was completely broken because when I booted the PC the cards fan would go to 100% and keep restarting the PC. Lucky I was able to get a full refund from OCUK. I'm currently looking at the GTX 670 cards and I'm wary of not buying from MSI again because of their poor RMA service.

There was a faulty batch of 78 series gpu's that AMD helped Sapphire identify, idk if Sapphire recalled them or just playing the waiting game.

Afaik, out with Sapphire(not an AMD fault by the way before anyone jumps on it ;)), no other manufacturer has held their hands up apart from Evga with a small batch of 670's-the good guys that Evga are though gave out free upgrades to a FTW iirc.
