*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Hi,

As it is a bit quiet in here at the moment, I thought it might be a good time to ask a couple of questions regarding the new 3G version of the Nexus 7.

Like a few others on here, I have recently purchased one of these, and have inserted a Vodafone 'data only' SIM, which has been recognised by the device.

When I send an SMS text message to the associated number I receive an indication that it has arrived, and can read it in a small 'black box' but after that it just seems to vanish!

What I would like to know, is whether received text messages are actually stored anywhere, and if so, how can I access them later, and secondly, how can I send an SMS text message from the device?

I know there are plenty of third party apps around such as Tablet Talk or Go SMS, but these appear to be written primarily for tablets without any built in 3G functionality.

I expected to see find an app such as 'Messaging' (as on the Samsung Google Nexus phone) already installed, but there is nothing!

If I were to install a SIM which included a text allowance, would this icon then be displayed, and the app installed? I somehow doubt it... and Google so called 'Technical Support' are no help whatsoever!

Has anyone actually tried this please, or come up with any sensible solutions to this particular problem?

Thanks! :)

Just ordered a 32GB from the phone shop place for £179 :) already have a iPad 4 but I wanted something smaller and cheaper that I could take to work and tinker with etc. one thing I couldn't work out is in the description it says colour is brown but in the picture it looks black...

Is it worth get any sort of rear cover for this? I'm very careful btw.

Yeh its almost black.

I got a cheap slim £8 case off eBay, am loving it, definitely recommend it to protect it and the stand helps a lot to prop it up. Oh and its magnetic so the sleep/wake works with the tablet when you close the lid.

Go sms works wel,l and probably Whatsapp too, but as advertised, the N7 3G is intended for data only.

Thanks... I hadn't realised that the 3G version is actually being advertised as a 'data only' device! At least it is possible to read any SMS texts sent to it without having to install any additional apps!

According to the Google Play store, WhatsApp is not compatible with the Nexus 7... 3G or otherwise!

I might check out Go SMS, provided it does not require to recipient to install it as well, which I believe is the case with Whats App. :(

Edit: Although it costs £1.79 'Tablet Talk' is apparently specifically designed for the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets with larger screens... has anyone tried it?

Yeah I've been using it for a few months with my S3. Works a treat over Bluetooth.

It's a tablet, not a phone :D :)

I expect if you did a bit of googling you could find the stock messaging.apk

Yeah I know people using Go sms so that definitely works, and I assumed whatsapp would be ok too, given the 3G connection. I had to install Whatsapp on my Wi-Fi only N7 by using a titanium backup from my android phone ( Galaxy S at the time ) and it works a treat.

From the Google Play Store page..

£239.00
WiFi + Mobile data
32 GB
Unlocked

But SMS works fine.

Good luck ;)

Thanks... hopefully it doesn't require the recipient to have it installed also? On, thinking about it, probably not, as most texts are going to be sent to a phone anyway!

Yes, I know it is, but what started me off was when I received some texts from Vodafone in respect of my SIM order, plus some activation details, which vanished as soon as I had read them, and didn't appear to be saved anywhere!

I have no real wish to 'root' my Nexus 7, or anything like that though.

As the previous poster surmised, they do indeed use TNT.

The email, or message, they sent you with the tracking number should have included a clickable link.

A google nexus 7 turned up at work last week with no contact name, no return address, no order number on it. I told the postroom man that it was mine but he didn't believe me.

Could have been anyones as there was no name on it !!
