Do you have any “technologically impaired ducks” in your office?

Aside from what I guessing is just the usual 'techie' anti-Apple drivel, I'd be keen to hear why you think Apple gear is "no good for anything requiring grunt"

As for the second paragraph. Guess what? Those guys make the money, and if they want a nice shiny expensive MacBook just to open PowerPoint then IT gets off its bottom and provides. That's business.

These kind of people just see shiny stuff without seeing the actual impact or cost to the company. I've seen this problem before when some art idiot where I worked bought 500 macs out the blue and said make them work. It cost the company literally hundreds of thousands of pounds in contractor fees and additional hardware to get them implemented into a Windows infrastructure. All they were used for was for students to use youtube and facebook. /faceplant

We have an IT Nights Manager at work who may aswell be telling us he has his own satellite hooked up to his Mac Book. I dont mind people who dont know anything about computers, I have patience for them. Its people that know lots and talk out of their backside about what they own!

Been there, got the t-shirt. The powers that be don't always listen to IT when they really should...

Seems your getting a bit touchy there buddy, when it comes to performance we need heavy dedicated graphics and the ability to bolster the memory to go along with it. In that area Apple get a bit sketchy.

As for your second paragraph, don't you think your getting a little pushy about the subject? My initial rant is about the fact that we are throwing away the budget just to facilitate their lust for their new fashionable gadget. I suppose my job should be to make sure the Big Boss can wave his dick around in confidence?

I'm not getting touchy at all. The know it all, superior to everybody else attitude of IT departments really winds me up. Yes I work in IT (and have seen it all)

As for the second paragraph. Unless you control the IT budget (or have a similar position of responsibility) then there's not much you can do really.:) If the Boss wants a MacBook Pro then the boss gets one. Your job is to make sure it works, buddy.:D

Oh and I'm being blunt not pushy!

That sucks, did IT not make a stand or was the boss just arrogant to the facts?

Sadly it's a small company (well we're the UK subsidiary of a large french company) There's only twenty odd of us here and the MD basically has absolute control and can buy whatever he want as long as sales are ok, they don't really look into our costs too much.

ive had plenty like these

when i first started working as an apprentice, was giving someone phone support on getting their mic working. was on for about half an hour checking all settings i could think of then turned to my manager and asked if he could chat. he picked up phone and said is it in green slot or pink? yeah switch it to the pink slot thats for mic.

Job done. was then i learnt dont assume people know the basics!

another one i heard my manager on phone to someone. i couldnt hear was person was saying

person:

manager: it wont shutdown? it just restarts?

person:

manager: ok what are you doing when shutting down?

person:

manager: instead of clicking restart have you treid clicking shutdown?

person:

manager: no problem, bye.

looks at me

manager: Did i actually just say that to someone?

one more, guy was trying to access a secure link,

me: have you got the link starting with https://?

person: yes

me: defiantly is https and not just standard http?

person: yes defiantly is https

me: ok ill remote on and take a look

remoted on

link http://website.co.uk

Cheers for clarifying, Sorry for being an ass \o/ I was trying to get to 100 posts without being an *******, damn =P

Had a support call logged a couple of months back to replace the "white ink" in a printer... :D

Yep, she is not technical in the slightest though.... The support log was emailed around within the department for amusement :)

Surely your not being serious.. white ink? you should have agreed and told them that the white ink is really hard/expensive to replace! ???????=profit

Well we have a printer which has white ink so I wouldn't laugh too much ;)

I was working at this regulatory body and the top guy there earning over £1m a year basic, his title was ridiculous as well, Director General or something. He came in some mornings and said his PC was not working and on more than one occasion all i had to do was turn it on. On one occasion it was turned on but it had gone to sleep.

oh the famous - "Why is my screen saying no input"

My boss basically 'discovered' that he was going to get viruses that would destroy the company if he got another PC, so he bought a 2k macbook.

He now wants everyone to have iphones.

Would love all the staff to have iPhones. :)

Yep, do as I say or else.

Bosses love underdogs who keeps quiet but gets them browny points and even if it lets them wave their dick around in confidence that's what IT people need to do. On the other hand people in IT know if there is no money or things that are waste of money the aboves don't listen.

Always remember: unless you are a decision maker you don't have a leg to stand on regardless of how much money is wasted.

I do that, if it doest work press the button more and a bit harder :P, same with the mouse. I know it wont work, but im too optimistic and think that it will after a few min.

I have this debate weekly with a colleague at work. He bemoans every extra £ we waste. My retort, every single time, is: Can you change it? Is it your money?

Saying that, I've been a decision maker with a fairly large budget in the past. All that happens is another decision maker higher up overrides your decision. You can't win unless you're the monkey at the top of the tree. :D

I've used them too.

Has anyone met a technologically proficient duck? I had my phone on a bench a few days ago when some ducks came over, they didn't even seem to understand what it was.

That would depend how high the tree is. :D I am a decision maker to a certain level but once someone above says no/yes then what can you do except get on with it.

This is what makes a business. On the other hand I love to say 'told you so' regardless of the situation. :)

Just be glad that you don't work in a school where the idiots emailing across the 'issues' are teachers and then worry that these are the people supposedly tasked with teaching our children the ways of the world and getting them a decent education.

I sit here despairing half the time at their stupidity and ignorance.

Oh yes, I can relate to that.

When I was a tech at an FE college we had to put a sticker on the base unit power button of the principals PC that said on/off.
