BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Rock solid.

Excellent!

Anyone else? Any problems? Any issues dealing with BT customer service (who used to be notoriously bad when I was a customer a few years back).

Are the technical support any good or do they just follow a script?

Are the BT community forums on their website of any help getting problems sorted?

(can you tell I'm expecting the worst...?)

Forums: basically useless if you know what you're on about.
Connection: stable, solid, very consistent, but with +15ms of broken routing induced latency. If you don't care about this, it's fine.

I'd recommend Sky over BT, but am not presently with Sky.

Thanks for the info guys, that clears that up! :)

So...how are you all finding BT? I'm nerviously thinking of placing an Infinity2 order with anytime calls this afternoon.

I'm predicted anywhere between 25-34 down and 6 up...two different checkers tell me different things regarding the download speeds!

I'm currently on a very solid and problem 10/1 with O2 so I'm nervous about moving over!

Customer service is hideous, beyond bad.

When it works its rock solid, after the engineer who did the Infinity upgrade left (who did a great job) I was getting a very nice connection and everything worked fine (my ADSL2+ connection had worked pretty much flawlessly for the previous year or so), then had a 2nd engineer along to install a 2nd line and everything went to pot - and he left us with one telephone line completely out and the other faulty - and support is utterly useless for dealing with it or getting anyone to deal with it in a half reasonable time frame.

Last 2 times we had problems after messing about with normal support for 2-3 weeks getting passed from pillar to post and broken promise after broken promise I went straight to Ian Livingstone and his ELC team had it sorted in under 48 hours... we are currently trying to deal with it through Liv Garfield (head of openreach) but if that fails it'll be back to the CEO of BT group... shame you have to take issues to the top to get what should be normal levels of service.

EDIT: Some of this is more the telephony side than broadband but usually it comes to dealing with this anyhow if you end up actually needing support.

EDIT2: Oh yeah and due to how badly they messed up on the routing we get routed an extra 300 miles out the way adding 10-15ms latency for no good reason as mentioned above... I mean seriously my connection goes from South Somerset->Sheffield->London before going out onto the public internet - could possibly solve that going to a different ISP but at the moment it doesn't bother me that much other than obviously exposing my connection to potential faults country wide when it doesn't need to.

Speed been very good for me but doesn't ever seem to go back to 75mb seem to be stuck on 69mb however i am not complaining at all. :p

Line is extremely stable, very rarely disconnects and latency is very good in games usually around 20-30ms.(very rarely goes over 50)

Very happy so far, does anyone know if my speed would auto adjust when router/modem are left on? or would i need to reset them to get the 75mb back?

Glad i made the move from BE so far.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's appreciated.

Sorry to hear of your problems Rroff, sounds like it's because you did something a little out of the norm...who would want another line *shock horror*...

I'm thinking I'm going to chance it, even a 3x speed increase would be nice and the 6x upload speed would be very welcome!

I'll keep reading these posts...I've got a 7 day cooling off period if I decide against it! :)

It was great this morning til the 2nd engineer came out :| had a constant 9MBytes/s download from my dedicated server and uploading at 2.5MByte/s.

I really wish BT would update their coverage map for Infinity.
It's still showing as some area's being enabled by Sept 2012! I just know my area will get put back :(

have you tried turning the modem off/disconnecting the ppp connection for a few minutes to get a different ip address and a better route?

Well I've done the deed! :D

Unfortunately I'm only predicted 25/6 but that's still 2.5x faster than what I have down and 6x faster up so I can't complain!

Strange thing is coolwebhome estimates a speed increase of 3.44x which would give me a speed of over 30mbps.

Would anyone who is already on FTTC mind just putting their post code into that checker and see what it says compared to what you are getting?

Thanks! :)

coolwebhome is using uplift to calculate the speed. BT Wholesale checker's estimate is going to be more accurate, even if it is a little conservative.

If its predicting 25/6 then you will probably get atleast that - the wholesale checker at the moment seems fairly accurate for atleast minimum conditions.

After firstly saying September and then being moved back to 31st December, ive checked today and i can order it. 67mb Down 20mb Up.

Gunna get that on order later.

Anyone have Youview from BT, it any good? have searched to no avail

How do I go about keeping my current landline number and switching?

Do I order BT infinity first online and then phone Virgin to cancel or cancel first?

Does virgin give you 30 days?

It's fairly accurate.

I was estimated 56/16 and I get that in the evenings perhaps a little bit more (62-65/16) but any other time of day I get 73/18 :).
