BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just wondering for those of you with FTTC already...what is the hardware like?

I've been reading mentions on here and other forums of Infinity coming with a modem (what's one of those again? :D) and people recommending different modems and routers instead of using the basic kit.

What I will be wanting to do is plug a couple of bits of kit into the router, a voip, an ethernet powerline connector and a broadband credit card terminal, so I want gigabit speeds for the internal network (obviously not the broadband bit!).

So...what's the setup up? What does it come with and can I swap the kit about?

I'm going with either BT or Sky, I really can't decide which.

Thanks. :)

bt fttc comes with just a homehub 3, NOT a separate modem and router.

Sky are really keen to get me on fibre, they're looking into paying my BT cancellation fee. I doubt anything will come of it, but due to having the TV package with them I'd end up saving around £25 pcm once I move.

First official indications of Fibre on Demand pricing from Openreach

The bigger news for many is the some of the first official indications of the installation cost for Fibre on Demand, a property that is 500m away from a NGA Aggregation Node will incur a charge of £1000 plus another £500 for installation of the service into the property.

Both emails and the two tracking numbers say bt infinity and line same day (1st Feb first email, 6th Feb second email). When the BT guy called on Sat, I asked and he said to me same time.

Got the engineer(s) coming today to do the lines (hopefully) might see what they have to say about it. He was told by BT they had to do it as 2 seperate jobs. (The installation and then FTTC upgrade on his extra line that is, upgrading the existing line is obviously another job as well).

Both both modem and HH provided by the engineer (our HH never came in the post) - now swapped to a different router. Pretty quick job and the line syncs at 130/130 apparently (but we are limited to Infinity2 currently at the full 80/20 sync).

EDIT: First speed test was 68/17 but everyone jumping on and using it now and I didn't save earlier results - will post a speedtest result when the line is quiet again.

EDIT2: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 2nd engineer came to put the 2nd line in....... left the first line with no dialtone and intermitent internet (speed testing 20mbit down from 60+ and lots of disconnections)... sdfsfrsfrsdfgfbcvbvcb

Anyone got any ideas how long after the new cabinets have gone in the service goes live? The wholesale checker just says 2013, but the new cabs have gone in this week.

If they just got put in position be prepared for at least a 6-9 month wait id say

When ours were done the service was supposed to go live 2-3 months later but then bad weather and the olympics got in the way and enabling the exchange was delayed an extra 2-3 months so potentially it could be soon(ish).

The cabinet I am connected to was put in place in early September. It went live last week (and my install is 14 December).

The actual amount of time depends on what infrastructure is already in place for other cabinets and getting contractors acts together. They have to: Lay the fibre, connect the old cabinet to the new one, connect the fibre, find a power source and run the cable, connect the power to the cabinet. Test Cabinet. The problem is that most of these things are done by seperate companies so the time-lag between each step can be many, many weeks.

Wow 2nd engineer really did a number... picking up the phone on the 2nd line completely kills off whats left of internet access on the first line and drops internet momentarily on the 2nd line... and he told us it was all working when he left when plainly it can't have been... BT claim they can't get an engineer out for atleast a week... taking this one right to the top.

Thanks for the info guys, that clears that up! :)

So...how are you all finding BT? I'm nerviously thinking of placing an Infinity2 order with anytime calls this afternoon.

I'm predicted anywhere between 25-34 down and 6 up...two different checkers tell me different things regarding the download speeds!

I'm currently on a very solid and problem 10/1 with O2 so I'm nervous about moving over!
