BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Hey, if it makes you feel any better - I've read over on BT's forum plenty of horror stories. The most common one is a contractor comes out and says "I don't have the keys to the cab" he walks away and then you have to rebook!! :D

I've read similar. You'd think they'd know what would be needed beforehand, e.g. it's telegraph poles in the street so a new wire from it is required.

I'm dreading my appointment. I guess it depends upon whether you get a nice or grumpy guy who just can't be bothered. I'd like the master socket on the side on the first floor but that might be pushing my luck.

Does it have to be BT (openreach) who fit new lines, regardless of who you choose? Would have thought so.

Not had any issues with connectivity - always found BT solid as a rock for that aspect unless your line has local issues with interference which isn't really something BT can help.

BT's DNS servers have been pretty bad lately tho to the point I've changed to using googles :( (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) quite often in the last couple of weeks or so they've been extremely laggy or failing some lookups and 1-2 seemed to have some degree of "poisoning" (resolving to ad/malware sites on some common sites - 110% sure this isn't a local issue to my network).

Already fed up of intermittent Internet, dodgy dns servers and fluctuating bandwidth... i cant even load google docs right now, would not be having any of these problems with zen

have you got an ip that starts with 31. ? reboot if you do, hell reboot anyway the cloud may have given you a silly route.

i had months and months of uptime on bt and it always worked fine.

Has anyone had infinity installed as a new customer that didn't have a master socket in their house?

Just moved into the house a month ago, no master socket or any sockets for that matter.

Looking into the possibility of ditching VM for Infinity due to packet loss issues in games.

they just fit a new master socket:)

Can you request to have it installed in another room, or are they still insistent on putting in the hall/living room.

I have everything being ran to a built in cupboard so there is a bit of conduit pipe running under the floorboards to outside.

And I take it the master socket is included in the install and I wont have to pay the £130 odds they usually charge people for a new line?

Has anyone managed to get above 100K upload on torrents? I presume even when setting protocol encryption forced it the upload speed won't get any higher?

Ask nicely and the engineer should move it for you. I bribed mine with tea and biscuits and he moved it to the other end of my flat, putting the wiring through the loft.

Hopefully not having a master socket at all in the house, the engineer will put it where I want, hopefully!

Well, after a week since the installation, the service has been great so far. No issues, good speed, no complaints at all. The engineer even routed the cable under my floorboards for me.

My engineer did everything i asked of him but then i had already cat 5 cable to the places i wanted sockets and he still took 4 hours!!!! loads of trips to cabinets and exchanges.

Although not happy with speeds as i only getting 24mb down 3mb.:(

My Cabinet went live a couple of days ago, with an installation now booked for 14th December.

Lets hope that I get near the 80mb/20mb promised on the websites.

Are you far away from your cab?

I think I am about 100 yards away from mine maybe less.

Yeah regardless who you book it with; BT, Sky, TalkTalk, etc. They still book it via OR who either come out themselves (not very often these days) or alternatively one of their many contractors now come out and install it on their behalf.

Now I have two orders it seems. One for a new phone line on the 1st Feb as ordered (received confirmation email at weekend), but they've sent me another email today, exactly the same but with the date as the 6th and I can track both orders .

Sent them an email. I've always had good experiences with ISPs before, but seems like my luck is disappearing.

All I want is internet asap :(.

Just wondering for those of you with FTTC already...what is the hardware like?

I've been reading mentions on here and other forums of Infinity coming with a modem (what's one of those again? :D) and people recommending different modems and routers instead of using the basic kit.

What I will be wanting to do is plug a couple of bits of kit into the router, a voip, an ethernet powerline connector and a broadband credit card terminal, so I want gigabit speeds for the internal network (obviously not the broadband bit!).

So...what's the setup up? What does it come with and can I swap the kit about?

I'm going with either BT or Sky, I really can't decide which.

Thanks. :)

AFAIK they can't/won't do Infinity at the same time as putting a new line in (my brothers in the same boat) they put the line in (with ADSL connected I think lol) and then hook it up for infinity a week or 2 later.

Both emails and the two tracking numbers say bt infinity and line same day (1st Feb first email, 6th Feb second email). When the BT guy called on Sat, I asked and he said to me same time.

The Openreach modem terminates on an ethernet port, and as long as your router supports PPPoE then you can use whatever you want. I use an AirPort Extreme and the combination has been rock solid.
