Nan just got burgled - Help me track the laptop

Surely though if prey finished and the laptop is showing now on your account then its worked has it not?.

Prey only just got installed as he was killing services.

Once its installed you have to tell Prey its been "Lost" and then it will start collecting information.

I set it but havent got any information back. Assume he's killed Prey or likely just formatted it.

Logmein has been uninstalled and its been online since. I know this because the laptop has disappeared from my account which only happens when its been uninstalled.

Gutted, so it seems thieves are a little bit smarter than they used to be :( How could you protect against someone uninstalling your tracking app? Obviously if the HDD gets formatted you're buggered, but is there no low-level application that you could use to achieve the same thing as prey but without it being visible/obvious?

Would have to be BIOS level.

Does logmein not log connections? while it would be a lot of work if you have a time/date window and an IP address the owner of that connection can be found should you manage to get the relevant legal action in play.

Other than something built into the HardWare and running completely independently from the HDD. Theres no other way.

Was just reading this and it seems firmware level software exists so you can then check the status of and reinstall OS level software and other tools. I guess that kind of software isn't free/cheap though.

It does. But once its uninstall on the Client it removes itself from the account.

can't you notify it as stolen from the pray website...pretty sure you can :p

Yup, did this straight away. But the laptop was already taken offline by this point.

You did all you could to get it back, shame he was so tech savvy (or had a mate who was). Time for your nan to increase her security, how did they gain entry?

I'm not that familiar with logmein but doesn't the software your using to connect to the remote host keep any logs? seems a bit short sighted if it doesn't but it wouldn't suprise me.

He said above that once the app is uninstalled the machine is removed from the account so he can't check it. That's a bit silly on logmein's part.

LogMeIn should tell you the IP of the connection that was last used for that PC so you should be able to find that within the list of your computers. I have never had a computer removed from my list once the software has been uninstalled from the PC. They've always stayed in there until I have actually removed it from the panel itself. Was the username and password for your LogMeIn account stored in the browser on her computer? If so, you might want to change your password otherwise the thief will have access to any of your PCs if they have managed to get into your account.

Also, to all those saying LogMeIn needs permission to access remote control, no version requires this once installed, otherwise you'd have a hard time accessing your PC remotely using it.

What I don't understand is how the laptop was removed from the online records of Logmein without someone with the login (i.e the OP and not the thief) clicking to remove it from the online system itself.

How does the website know the host laptop has uninstalled the program and not just turned the laptop off? I can't see the uninstaller being able to send an authorised script to your account to remove it from the website. Surely if the OP hasn't removed it, it should still be there but just logged as offline?

Hmm my apologies, I have just removed LogMeIn from my PC here and it has indeed removed it from my list of computers. That seems a little stupid really.
