MPs call for '32% salary increase'

The stupid thing is they probably are underpaid for the type of job it is (though the actual salary is massively enhanced with all the expenses and perks) but for gods sake politicians, you of all people should understand the importance of PR and public perception in your jobs....Now is really not the time to be discussing this.....

Right on the back of capped 1% benefit rises, public sector pay freezes for the last few years, massive talk of austerity and hardship and 'we are all in this together' and you think it's a good idea to express the opinion you should get a 30% pay rise....and you wonder why the electorate has little respect for your class...

I think MPs should be paid £100k per year, but get rid of expenses. That way you don't have to spend thousands (millions?) administering the expenses or investigating anything improper.

Oddly their pay hasn't changed in about 15 years (something like that) so in a way it should have risen (plus the good ones work a 60 hour week and the PM works something closer to 80, figures from A-Level politics 7 years ago).

So just like those in the private sector then?

God I've waited ages to say that. I feel dirty now :-(

Ok, so, members of OcUK, if you were given an anonymous survey that basically says, 'would you like to be paid more?' What would you say?

The answer would be yes but if I'd just told my subordinates their pay would be frozen at 1% I wouldn't be asking 32 times as much!

That's an unrealistic proposition. The advantage of free movement and capitalism is you can say 'Go elsewhere' when you want more money. There's only one lot of MP's in the UK so they can't. But do you really want a race to the bottom for the people who bring in the law for this country? Would we not want to have higher and higher wages to attract the very best this country has to offer ensuring the legislation going through is being thought out to a higher standard?

They 'deserve' to be publically flogged then locked up for good.

:D

Why do MP's need housing in london anyway?
They already have the worlds most luxurious hostel maybe if all MP's were as down to earth as these guys

The country could be saving a lot of money

Since when being an MP became a job?
Do you think a professor of law (and there are many in this country) has less knowledge about legislation than an MP?

They are underpaid when compared to other industries and positions with equal responsibility.

Eh what exactly is the responsability of an MP (not cabinet ministers but a back bench MP?)

They have and army of over 100 000 civil servants in London alone to do all their work they are merely spokespersons for their constituents they don't even have to think about how to vote as their party whip does their thinking for them. Nice money for sitting sleeping in the house of commons.
:o

Hmm this is exactly what Cameron wants to do for the European Union. What's good for the goose.... :o
