Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

I could well be interested. I have just had an email from Dell cancelling my order due to an "unspecified problem". When I called all they could offer was that I replace the order on the site but would not honor the discount codes. They also had no idea why it was cancelled other than a possible system error.

Will keep an eye on the MM.

Do you think its due to stacking discount codes Moogleys?
I also stacked them but mine has gone through... I hope. I can't track of yet but reading up that's because it hasn't been scanned by the courier yet. (I have a he tracking link)

to many discount codes - probably system went "ehmmm is that allowed :D" hehe
Saw couple of Alienware M14x but only for few seconds....refresh and they were gone ..

I have no idea what happened but my order is now showing up again in my account and I have had an email stating a mistake was made and this has now been rectified and as a show of goodwill they have upgraded my order to include a Blu-ray drive and 16GB of Ram.

My brother is getting a superb laptop here if its not cancelled again or gets lost in delivery...

This gives me some faith back in Dell after my previous experiences of their customer service.

Great deal mate

Are crucial m4s still decent ssds?

Havnt really read up on ssds since I got my pc made for me last year, and will any m4 fit in the alienware r4, (going to buy some ram < the crucial stuff linked earlier in the thread> and an SSd today for when it comes)

Also can someone point me to where I can get advice on how to put the drive in ( and crucially what I need to do with the other drive, do I format it first, do I need to unplug it first? Do I need to update firmware for SSd before I put in opperating system or will it not matter )

This will be the first time I've ever done Anything remotely like this, and frankly I'm terrified ill break something

Test the laptop out before you start formating the hdd.

I find the m4 fine. You shouldnt need to update the firmware on it. In fact to get mine working i had to flash to an earlier version.

Its really easy to install. Unscrew the base and slide it upwards (or downwards depending which way its facing) and youll see the hdd bays.

Will see what gets delivered.

Easy to install. working inside a M17x is very easy, I've seen these machines stripped down to the motherboard and even seen the motherboards taken out, they are module based laptops, everything is like a desktop but smaller.

Nothing to worry about putting drives on these machines, the bays are really easy to get to, you just as said, take the bottom cover off and then you'll see the drive bays, you can even take the GPU out with the bottom panel removed.

Amazingly easy to work on, I was surprised when I saw an engineer working on the M17x that broke, but not to say its not without warning.. Dell have service manuals on their website, but anyhow installing a HD is easy..

That got snapped up pretty quickly! I'll probably list mine in there when its replacement arrives next week.

Yes, I think the chap that got this commented in a thread I made in the PC games section about how he wanted to get a new gaming laptop like mine.. Seems his luck was in, as that was a great laptop at a good price.

Its a steal and has an M4 SSD ;-) which is the only upgrade it needs really

The warranty, do i have to somehow transfer to the new owner?

Sam

Another reason why Dell should leave things as they are re warranty/ownership transfer. I read posts that people wanted that stopped so it would be more difficult for resellers but to be honest, it would be difficult for anyone since most of us here are likely to buy a new machine every year or so and sell off the old one. Many people wouldn't want to buy a used laptop without there being a warranty. I think it's great you can not only transfer a Dell warranty but extend it at a reasonable price direct with Dell too. That's my 2 cents.

Don't know if anyone's bought anything on the outlet recently, but I bought a 7720 last Tuesday. I didn't receive Order confirmation until Friday, and they also didn't reserve funds until Friday. Anyway, I was a little concerned my order hadn't gone through right but all looks ok as I've just received my dispatch email. Still hoping for an M17x R4 though.

I take it you're talking about the 7970 model that was there today Rob? I went for that too but was also too slow. I had an impossible captcha and I knew that when reloading that I'd be too late. Doesn't look like anyone here got it so bit of a shame.
