when you select leagues at the start of a game, for example, if i dont tick the brazil league, does it mean i cant buy anyone from that league?

No mate you will still be able to buy players from the brazilian league but you wont get the full squads if you see what i mean. Your have a hell of a lot of players to choose from if you select a large database even tho the league is not active so to speak. Your get your brazilian wonderkids still coming through to buy etc so dont worry :D

All my progress, down the ******* drain.

I don't think the game will let you go a season unbeaten, I got 29 victories in a row in my Ajax save and then lost 3 in a row, no morale drop or form.....

I went unbeaten in the league.

I'm annoyed because I had 3 points on top on second place, and stupid errors made me lose it.

Same in the CL. I started badly, with a loss, and I managed to get back in 1st. Now I lst to a crap napoli team. Ffs.

So when setting up a game I only plan to manage in England. Just put English league I. And large database?

I will still have access to all the foreign players?

Errors like that is why I have gone back to FM2012, FM2013 seems to me like sims where it is all about keeping the players happy and make sure you feed them compliments all the time!!!!

So i was started to get really bored when i wasn't doing anything so i gave FM another try but this time i wanted to skip forward to 2030 to play FM with a totally new era of players so it would make it kind of a new challenge to find new players and who was world class, well i took over at United in February 2028 with only enough players to fill the first team and subs and no one for backup .

Once i took over i looked to see how the team was getting on in the league, to my surprise we was down in 9th with a horrible defence record, by the end of the 2028 season i only kept the team in 9th place but that was only because i managed to get the defence to behave without becoming a leaking nightmare.

Now i have some kitty in the budget i went signing up some players to help with the squad and getting some better defenders, without champions league football i was pretty limited to get good players but i managed to find some really good gems that came alive during the next season, the total amount looks funny but i have two lots of transfer kitty to use which was around £178m when i first took over then i got another £159m for the next transfer budget.

So i started the 2028/2029 season with a fresh squad and some new faces to play with to get a good balance (some players in the picture above didn't arrive until the January windows), during the first have of the season i was hovering around 6th place with Chelsea and Arsenal but i signed 3 more players to help with the major injuries i was having and got 2 brilliant players on the cheap because they wanted to leave for more football, during the 2nd half of the season is when my team really kicked it into another gear and started to push for a champions league place.

By end of the 2028/2029 season i had managed to finish 2nd place 4pts behind City (City had a 15pts lead back in January but started to have a bad run at one point and didn't recover there performance from the 1st half of the season) who was crowned champions when they won on there 2nd to last game of the season.

I started the 2029/2030 campaign today with a clean sweep in the friendlies and dominated City in the Community Shield 6-1 which resulted in my new forward getting 3 goals (at £78m he better have) and 3-1 win over Arsenal, my main concern for the squad is not having enough cover for right midfield since 2 players who cover that position are 30/32 years old and i let an 18 year old who i wanted to develop for the position went on a season loan to Fulham without putting in a clause to call him back in case i needed him.

Hoped you enjoyed my little progression story because it was a pain in the ass playing with that squad when i first took over.

Yep thats it pal, you wont get there whole squad like you would if you have the league actually running but you still get loads of players and good youngsters coming through.

I run 5 leagues, England, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy and i still get 4 star game speed :) The more leagues the better i like being offered big jobs abroad and turning em down :D my board loves me

i just started with all english leagues only on large database as a sunday league-er.

wanted to start at the bottom so the only manager job in blue square was havant and W (never heard of them). 0 transfer budget and 5k wage budget.

im off!

I think I should compile a newbie Fm guide, as I don't want to stay repeating myself. I'll try and do it tonight, and maybe the OP can put it (or a link to the post) in the first post.

Well done to all the people who have been posting stories. I have been enjoying them.

J350M on transfers is CRAZY! Your save seems interesting though. I always wanted to start at a later date and then see who is good and who isn't.

Might be a stupid question but what benefit is a large database over a small one? Purely the quantity of players listed on the transfer list? So does that mean that having a small database means I will not have the choice of the players in the large database?

Tried a few tactics with Havant and waterlooville. Settled on a simple 442. After a bad start with 352 and then 41212 things turned around and I went 7 undefeated. But that was ended with a defeat at Bradford in the fa cup 2nd round.

Think I'm around 15th in the league. My goal is to finish 13-17th.

Can anyone advise on how to stop my team taking long shots. They are wasting so many chances doing so.

And how do I get the play to go down the wings and lump crosses in? All the time my ass manager says we are dominating in the air.

Longs shot annoy me so much on the last 2, there is boarderline no way to stop them just lumping it at goal from 30 yards out 20 times a game. I wish there was an option to fine them for doing it because I basically have to fight my team to listen and shoot in the box.

To get anything to work I use the shouts work ball into box, exploit the flanks (that seems to stop wingers cutting inside and running into my forward), play through defence (to encourage the ball to get into the box in the first place) and if no one can be bothered to chase down the ball on the break get the ball forward is pulled out to get them to lump it to the quick guys at the front.

Even with all that I still get one idiot who thinks its clever to dribble past 8 people and take a shot at the back post that goes out for a throw in instead of cutting it back to the 5 players screaming for it in the box :(
