Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Can I just ask - why do you think this is? I mean i'm sure I read that Microsoft had to actually spend time coding the Start Menu out of their OS, why would they do this when they can just leave it in and please people on both sides of the fence?

I think Win+x does most of the important stuff plus charm bar on right side, the old style Start menu is really only good for desktop users on Win8,does nothing for tablet, touchscreen users etc...

End of the day do we still need it?...I was one of the first to install a third party mod button on Win8 beta but when retail/offical version was released I said I would try and use Win8 like you are suppose to without it and bingo no longer miss it.

For those upset about the lack of a start button in Windows 8, prepare yourself for another disappointment -- "Windows Blue", an upcoming short-cycle successor to Windows 8, is not expected to bring the feature back.

Says it all really, end of the day you can still use Win8 just fine without it.

Also knowing Microsoft they are thinking plenty of third party mods out there for it why should we even bother, especially when you got Stardock a gold partner of Microsoft which has Start8 as you know.

Well that's my point - why specifically spend money and risk sales removing it? Why not just leave it there and give the choice?

I've never really thought about why that decision was made before - I don't believe it's in the name of "progress" as the bottom line to Microsoft is surely making money, i.e sales?

I assume they think the new way is better, its a new paradigm of using the desktop. Also that most people won't give a proper try if they leave the old method there.

On a home laptop just used for home things browsing the web etc, I've not needed it. But on my main work machine I've installed Classic Start Shell. But then I didn't like the Vista/W7 menu and have been using Class Shell long before Windows 8 came along.

Interesting.

I just don't get why it matters to Microsoft what we do with the operating system, so much in fact that they would code the Start Menu out.

I mean leaving it there as a theme option would have saved coding time!

A couple of silly questions:

I've bought this for my desktop PC, if I installed it on my laptop with the same serial would it deactivate the desktop installation?

If I install it on my laptop, do the same gestures that work on a tablet interface work using the touchpad?

Help!

Just installed W8 Pro Upgrade on a fresh formatted SSD. I can't activate it apparently because it didn't have W7 installed on it first? WTF?

Do I really to go to the hassle of re-installing W7 first? Because if so, I really CBA. Why can't it check my DVD drive and look at the W7 install disc? Or ask for my W7 key to confirm it's genuine? Stupid MS!

Is there any way around this?

Microsoft should have giving you this option built in for the first build it would have been the way to go, as surely they would have heard peoples fews about not having a start menu would have made the transition a lot easier.

As for Start8, so some one with a brain is making afew pounds out of people like you, l would have waited to see what Microsoft do in the long run.

I agree the option should have been there but i don't want to wait. I wanted Windows 8 and paying £2 to get it looking and operating exactly how i want is a small amount to pay in my eyes. Coupled with the fact Windows 8 Pro full version cost me £25, also including it let me use a pirate cd key to get the offer i say fair play to them.

Hmmm...found the following via Google which I tried:

Open regedit by pressing Windows-q, entering regedit and selecting the result from the list of hits.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Change MediaBootInstall from 1 to 0
Go back to the start screen and enter cmd there.
Right-click Command Prompt and select to run it as administrator.
Type slmgr /rearm on the command line and hit enter.
Reboot Windows now.
Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows.

Seems to have worked, but the last step wasn't necessary as when I returned to Windows Activation following the reboot, it told me it was already activated.

Has anyone else received an email reminder to activate Windows Media Center?

As far as I knew I'd activated it, following the instructions to search my computer for "add features" has been fruitless and it appears this feature has disappeared since I used it to originally download Media Center.

Checking with "view details in Windows activation", I have Windows 8 with Media Center and it was activated on 8/1/13, I'm just curious as to why I received this email.

Yes. I got the email. I've activated already. It's probably just a blanket email. Just keep your proof of activation and you'll be fine.

Is anyone else having an issue where the windows key doesn't work at all?

EDIT: Sigh nevermind, was disabled by my keyboard which had done it. Weird how that didn't do anything in Windows 7.

I've just upgraded and its making me so angry I don't think I'm going to stick it out. I hope it's easy to roll back to win 7.

Bugbears:

- retarded metro interface looks like a kids toy
- no start button
- had to google to find out how to restart windows
- still not sure how to launch programs without scrolling though a massive list of everything
- where have all my sidebar gadgets gone? these were brilliant

Did you not research your purchase before upgrading?
