Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Can someone explain why Oats are so revered on this forum (vs other forms of carbs). I would genuinely like to know.

And does anybody disagree that butter is better than a vegetable oil based spread.

PS: I was reading a thread for a few hours, which uses only scientific sources for information - ie. no bro-science, which is used in this forum (and most others). I'll dig it out so some of you can have a read. It makes for interesting reading.

1) convenient, carb rich, tasty, low GI, cheap. To expand, for me personally i like to keep insulin in check whilst still getting convenient carbs in my day especially in the run up to gym or cardio work. (unless cutting)

2)oil is oil to some degree, you shouldnt heat olive oils as i understand as you create transfats. But if your cutting you should be on 0 cal spray anyway and if not, use whatever. Butter in my personal opinion does not function as a lubricant in a pan as well as something like sunflower oil, and can also impart more flavour which may be a negative.

3/PS) Science based threads are all well and good if you understand the appropriate methodology and if you can correctly identify poorly designed studies and find flaws in false or flawed results. If you cannot then science based threads can be more dangerous than 'bro-science' threads. As they encourage you to give elevated status to potential nonsense over good knowledge on the basis that some 'scientist' somewhere did a study on it.

The reverence a typical beginner or non scientific minded trainer gives to published scientific study is misguided. Somewhere out there will be published studies explaining that the world is flat, black is white and that if i pray really REALLY hard to the right god, paedophiles will spontaneously combust. But no matter how much science those studies contain they are still wrong.

I like oats because I can buy them in mass, stick them in a shake and get some carbs in without having to eat. They're just something easy to stick in a shake.

My first choice for carbs tends to be sweet potato. Fruit/Nuts would be my second choice, but currently I'm using brown rice.

Butter rocks it's natural. Margacrap is heavily processed crap.

Bodybuilding.com is full of bro science. What you want are medical papers. :)

Oats are generally pretty good as they're low GI, doesn't affect gluten allergies, can help lower LDL cholesterol, is good source of fibre and slows the digestion process (i.e. keeps you fuller for longer), may improve insulin sensitivity, it's cheap, they're generally unprocessed and "natural", lots of nutrients which are good for you, contain decent ratio of proteins too, diversity to cook/eat.

That's why they're popular. :)

Ultra low fat or ultra high this, ultra low that is all rubbish really - you just need a balanced diet - it really is that simple. Eat good clean foods, keep the processed crap out out of your diet, lots of fish and veg, and you're laughing. People don't eat enough veg. Veg/greens rock.

Essentially buy two get third free

I think it's something wrong with the system whereby after following the referral link (used yours LiE) it somehow expected the cheapest item in my basket to be the 250g freebie and automatically applied 100% discount to it.

Can't complain :p

FF are you talking about proper Butter? Rather than what most people would call 'butter'

I should really read some medical stuff whilst I have free access to the journals.

£28.99 referral discount looks tasty!

I prefer butter to marg. My wife loves it too, keeps it at room temp in a butter dish like her grandma used to ;)

Yes real butter. :) That's all I buy, it's a little more expensive, but it's worth it (I only buy French butter :p).

Sadly not true i have to buy specialist oats as regular oats are milled in cereal mills.

That's what I meant by the unrefined/natural ones - i.e. ones which haven't been cross contaminated. :) Why buy any other types?! :p

However that's a good point to ask suppliers like MP and TPW etc... :) But I don't buy my oats from them, I get it from a wholesaler that sells gluten free oats and just blitz them myself if I feel the need to - or just eat them as they are.

Have a read through the thread and you will see that everything mentioned is linked to an article. That particular thread has no bro-science...that's why it makes for interesting reading.

Here's a summary, including links to the articles:

A well put together argument for the oat. Good answer.

The word "clean" is the issue. What is "clean"?
I've added plenty of fat to my body, when eating no junk food and eating "clean"...which in turn required me to enter into a long cutting phase.

On a separate note, not everybody has the same aim. Some people want to be as lean as possible, at all times. Some people want to be great runners/cyclists. Some people want to be as strong as possible. Hence, I don't feel that there is a 1 diet fits all.

Also, lets not forget that some people find a particular diet, easier to handle, while another person finds a different diet easier to stick to. So, a diet which works for person1, doesn't necessarily work for person2.

The science behind a Ketogenic diet is strong and technically should work for anybody wanting to shed body fat, while maintaining a high percentage of lean muscle.

Morning coffee currently:

- coffee
- jacked teaspoon of coconut oil

i read this

It was John Patrick Henry’s 2nd cousin’s boyfriend Juan Valdez who said, “Give me high-end coffee or give me death.” That’s because toxins in cheap coffee (Starbucks included) will steal your mental edge and actually make you weak, but clean coffee actually fights cancer and provides antioxidants.

and i really dont think i can stomach any more. What toxins are there in 'low end coffee'? Since when did anti oxidants prevent cancer? Apart of course from in the minds of self appointed health gurus and purveyors of snake oil. I mean really where does this nonsense come from?

That picture.... It's beauriful.... I've watched it like 15 times now.

Sunama, it almost sounds like you're claiming eating protein and fat won't make you put on excess fat? Eating too many calories will make you fat, the macronutrients of those calories don't quite matter as much unless training for a specific goal. A few lbs of water if you eat a lot of processed carbs, sure. A loss of lean body mass if you don't keep protein high whilst working out, granted. But you seem to be saying eating less carbs is in itself going to make you leaner - not without cutting your overall calorie intake.

How did you get that to happen? I can't replicate it.
