Gaming moments that surprised and delighted you

Had a tennis game on the PS1 years ago. Thought it was pretty standard, me and my brother were enjoying playing...

Then out of the crowd we here a deep voice yelling "BRUNO!".
We rolled around laughing for ages!! WTF!? :D

Then we noticed some of the other stuff they shouted out in this pretty serious game was hilarious! (I think it was that they were badly recorded voice, so it sounded like they were saying other things.

Best surprise I've ever had in a game!

The bit where you first saw the island in all its glory in Far Cry

I was all like "ZOMGG GRAPHICZSS!!!111"

Hearing actual speech in a game for the first time in Fast Food Dizzy on the Spectrum

Only on a 128K model :)

KOTOR. That moment when you realise..

^^^ This - still my favourite Star Wars game

Also, fond memories of playing Counter-Strike for the first time at the local cybercafe whilst I was at college... still remember the epic hilarity that ensued with the APC on cs_siege :D

Not played this (and don't plan to), anyone care to spoiler tag the information on what happens?

In a twist you find you are actually the story's antagonist i.e. the person you think is the opposing bad guy for most of the game is actually you

On an unrelated note my own strangest experience with a game is somewhat convoluted - after the 15 year Quake 2 anniversary thread feeling a bit nostalgic and having a couple of days off over christmas I pulled out the source code for the game and had a bit of a play putting together a mod to beef up the coop side of the game a bit with dynamically spawning enemy with some rudimentary AI to find ambush spots, patrol routes, etc. at one point completely forgetting I had my mod loaded I remembered they added 64 player multiplayer maps to the game (these have absolutely no monsters/single player content) and loaded one up to have a quick wander around it... turning a corner I'm suprised to watch a strogg come wandering out of the shadows (completely unexpectedly as its a multiplayer map) and continue down a corridor, pausing now and then to look left and right not having seen me yet... probably one of those "you had to be there" moments. I then watched quite fascinated for a few minutes as my mod progressively brought the map to life :D

Well I'd be surprised they could keep that hidden until the reveal, surely it'd be in your face.

The sound and especially the music in some of the Commodore 64 games. Rob Hubbard and Martin Galway did an incredible job back in the eighties and I don't think I have been in awe of anything since...well ok maybe a few other things but that was the first one to immediately come to me.

The joy of reaching level 50 with my Friar in DAoC after countless hours of farming Shredders in Darkness Falls has yet to be matched by any gaming experience!

Stepping out of the spaceship for the first time on Unreal 1, seeing the massive landscape.

Riding the train to work on HalfLife 1

Realising you can escape dying on Portal 1, and the whole lead up to the confrontation with GLADOS.

Call of Duty, Pegasus Bridge. A truely epic level.

Are you insane?

She had the most useless limit breaks in the game.

Fixed :p.

Healing Wind is easily replaced by Cure/Potions for the most part which can be used by much better attacking party members.

Seal Evil is only really useful in two boss battles if that.

Breath of the Earth can again be replaced by a better attacker using healing items (I mean you're rarely affected by two status ailments at a time).

Fury Brand can be useful but just using Hypers is a much better option than having a useless attacker in my opinion.

And in all honesty if you get her level 3 limit breaks you're doing something wrong :p.

Have to agree, but being a fanboy, I have had all 4 with her, just for the sake of completing the game. :-)

The graphics from FFVIII really amazed me, compared to FFVII. That was a WoW moment for me :D

I got all of them, even the final one!

a game has never scared me so much as the original fear. i was shocked at how many times i had to save and quit for a "rest" :p call me a whimp or whatever but that game was intense! (come to think of it, doom 3 was the same..)

also, farcry, the original, the landscape felt epic

I never even got past the demo of F.E.A.R because it scared me so much!

1st enounter with a Cyberdemon in Doom.
Picking up the Redeemer for the 1st time in UT99.
Getting the mavity Gun in Half Life 2.
Seeing the graphics of the original Farcry blew my mind at the time.

Oh and stumbling upon the Crashed UFO in Fallout 3 purely by chance and getting an Alien Blaster out of it was surprising and I didnt know it even existed.

My first large group in WoW (vanilla, when one of the instances in black rock mountain was a 10-man - what was it called?) - the sheer amount of chaos was absurdly exhilirating. I don't think any 40-man raid ever quite matched that initial "what the **** is going on" panic of a mighty ten players together.

The first time my WoW druid got flight form was also absolutely sublime. I did nothing for about an hour other than fly around joyously.
